Topic: Ear buds (expensive $80 ones or ipod style)

We have a Motorola Radius GP300 radio system with Nascar style headsets without ear buds.  Got for cheap.  The headsets all have 3.5mm connections for the ear buds but no buds.
Has anyone used ipod type ear buds on something like this?  The radio companies want to sell ear buds for $80.  I don't see what the difference would be.  I already own some $25 buds from Best Buy.

Re: Ear buds (expensive $80 ones or ipod style)

The only real advantage/difference to the expensive foam ones is that they seal out external noise a little better and are, to my ears, a little more comfortable over a couple hours. But other guys on my team say they can't tell the difference. This is a definite YMMV situation, but unless you have very sensitive ears or have cash to burn, you can save the $$ here and you probably won't even notice the difference. Cheers.

when you try to put a helmet on over standard earbuds in comparison to the foam ones designed to go in a helmet you will understand why...I can not get any of my ear buds to stay in besides my racing ones.  discount racing radios has the nice ones for 65

I tried the foam ones and didn't like them.  I ended up using a pair of Sony earbuds like this, the rubber will keep down the outside noise and also keep them in your ear when you put your helmet on.

Contact your local gun club - they will have, generally, agreements with local guys who can make custom-fit silicone earplugs.  Many of these guys will do custom work to embed earphones into the earplugs.  Not cheap - maybe $180 when finished - but they'll be the bees-knees.  Great for long distance motorcycle rides with an ipod.

I use those too and they work ok but don't cut down the outside noise as much as I'd like. One of my co-drivers has some similar-looking Shure earbuds with noise canceling and he raves about them so I plan on picking up a set before the next race.

Re: Ear buds (expensive $80 ones or ipod style)

I ordered 2 pair through this auction earlier today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … 0358754966

It was $36 shipped for 2 pair. I split them with a buddy.

They look like cheap headphones with foam ear plugs glued on, they probably are exactly that, but they were cheap enough I decided to give them a shot.

Re: Ear buds (expensive $80 ones or ipod style)

I used noise canceling ear buds that I normally use at the gym with my ipod at Nelson. Our car's quiet, but I had to turn the radio down.

They worked well.

In offroad racing we always use the $80 or $170 (custom molded) ones because our trucks are so loud and the only chance to hear the codriver and radio is with them.

We have to use duct tape to hold them and that usually works great.

I use this as my buds for music.  Great for plane travel, keeps out almost all noise, including crying babies.

They actually look and feel pretty good. However they have a mono jack on them and I've yet to get my pair to work with the stereo jack on our car. Need to make a run to Radio Shack and get an adaptor I guess or somehow determine if they simply don't function at all.

Buy them from PCI? I used to work for them, was the helmet tech. The custom molded earpieces are really nice, better than the Challenger or the cheapie foam earpieces.

Do NOT use iPod headphones, they get painful very quick and seal out as much noise as the interior of a Lemons car.
