Topic: Epic tow rig/idea

I know this has been done, how would you register it? My idea would be try to get it classed as an rv by putting a craper and what ever else would be needed...

Light Duty Bread Truck

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

At only 9200GVW, that is a very light duty truck. The truck itself probably weighs 7000, so not a lot of room for people & cargo.  Also, at that low GVW, it's probably a 6cylinder so not enough power to shove that brick through the air at 65MPH while hauling 2500# of racecar in the back.

Anton (X-args) has prety much that same tow rig registered as an RV to haul his Cavalier.  This is it at the Ridge recently after Sparky Pete tagged it.

Not like you couldn't do some upgrades, like... big block something with different setup in the back lol

Each state differs as to what is required for a vehicle to be considered an RV.  In CA, I *think* you just need a toilet and sink but perhaps an oven and fridge are required.  As you can see from these pixs of a homemade RV conversion in California, what they consider to be an "oven", "sink" and "fridge" is pretty strict.

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

Kinda figured needed a crapper and a kitchenette

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

As I recall, California requires something like four of the following:

Cooking facilities with on-board power source (Microwave -- check)
Potable water supply / washing facilities (Hand-pump sink -- check)
Refrigerator (gas or electric) (12 volt Igloo cooler -- check)
Heating and/or air conditioning separate from vehicle engine (12 volt heater -- check)
Sleeping accommodations (A cot or fold-down will do -- could double as work bench)
110 volt power supply separate from vehicle engine (A Harbor Freight inverter)
Toilet with external evacuation (A portable crapper won't pass)

Your state may vary.

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

Aha, I finally found it!   The requirements are stated in California Vehicle Code Section 6.040,
buried deep withing lots of other miscellaneous stuff.

Motorhomes:

Motorhomes must contain permanently-installed independent life support systems which meet the criteria of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) and provide at least four of the following facilities:

    cooking
    refrigeration or ice box
    self-contained toilet
    heating and/or air conditioning
a portable water supply system including a faucet and sink
separate 110-125 volt electrical power supply
    LP gas supply

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

Nice, seems doable, now if it was a bit more heavy duty...

Headache rack would definitely be a must, also this one's probably got 10 more feet on his lol

Re: Epic tow rig/idea

I'm working on mine right now. Step Van

1998 Freightliner  with 5.9l Cummins turbo inter-cooled diesel (24 Valve  6BT). 215 Hp 400 ft/lbs torque. 17' of box behind the drivers seat.
19700 GVW!!!! (9700 tare)
I've installed a 3KW DC to AC inverter, wired in some outlets, have a 30A RV input outlet and 25' cord (can run the AC stuff off shore power or the inverter, have a Domtic CF110 refrig/freezer (120AC-.75A or 12vdc-5.6Amps). 2 burner propane RV stove and a sink are going into a counter top, will eventually have a gray water and fresh water tank installed under the passenger side floor.
I'm putting a hitch on it to tow my car trailer.

I had this exact interior in the one I bought (old Aramark uniform delivery van)

those 2 shelves are now flat and become bunks!

Plenty for sale of various sizes and engines:

This has the 4bt, and a fuller 4 speed manual. You could maybe swap in the 12 valve 6BT from the 1985-1996 dodge trucks, but the transmission will only take about 200 Hp from what I have read.
