We've thought of this. Spinoff series for $100 motorcycles, $250 boats, and $2500 helicopters.
Mini bike races.
How about a pit-bicycle race before the cars get on the track? One lap around Thunderhill or MSR on a $3 Huffy would be pretty exciting.
$2500 helicopter races. hmmnnmnnmmmm.
do i need to know how to drive the $2500 helicopter?
because you know, if not, i'm all in.

You just have to buy the $50 Lemons Helicraptor License and you are qualified to fly.
I am thinking about doing that rally. Thanks for that. My wife hates you
I'm sure it wouldn't be allowed on most tracks but I want to see a behemoth Lemons race. Like ambulances, short buses, RV, etc.... It would be hilarious to watch some massive junkers hoofing around the track. Half of them would flop on their sides on the first lap. TG did something similar and I almost asphyxiated myself from laughing. I know they do it in figure 8 and some on dirt but I have yet to see a road course other than on TG.

Great idea....one lap on bikes $20 or less, then get a local charity to collect the bikes post-race....make a lot of kids happy!
How about $50 gopeds ?
I bought a badly crashed GSR 40 for $50 recently a few hours of tinkering and swearing later and it runs.
Anyone ghetto charged a goped yet ?
Is it even possible ?
All you guys are missing the boat big time.
LAWNMOWERS!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This is quickly spiraling into the halo wearing, maimed body having, limb loosing, sheer AWESOMENESS that we all enjoy! Anyone ever fitted a HANS device to a John Deere? We would have to have a super low budget and thorough bs inspections since there are some lawnmowers (naturally aspirated) that can out run a few of our cars. I see some amazing ghetto engineering happening with this. Maybe we could form the rules in a way that the engine/drive train/chassis itself is limited to the low buck budget but allow power adders to be free. Nitrous may be excluded since there would be some difficulty ensuring it's safety. This will stimulate some INSANE builds but still keep everyone honest on the rest of the mower/scooter/washing machine/whatever is decided. Maybe not even limit it to a specific chassis, maybe make it limited on engine size..... I see a few lawn mower powered recliners and toilets in the mix. :-D

I like where your headed with this. I helped with the local Elks lodge with something similar with donating bikes. If we don't use bikes and use something that is worthless to the rest of humanity there could be a $10-$20 entry fee (or something cheap) where proceeds are donated to charity and you win the satisfaction and some crazy trophy. Since it's a short race then each team could have multiple entries. Even at a $5 entry there would be a substantial amount for donation if half the attendees entered. Ideas?
Oh please someone do this! I am bored at work, can you tell?
the rest of the mower/scooter/washing machine/whatever
I like where this thread is headed, but it wouldn't entirely be a first at a Lemons event....

I was thinking of just having racers take their crappy pit Schwinns out on the track for a lap (Thunderhill would be fun), but we could probably get real bicycle freaks to show up (with $5 bikes), pay a charity entry fee, and have a real, competitive race; their fee could cover admission to watch the cars race as well. I'd be happy to BS-inspect the entrants' bikes for sufficient crappiness.
Lets do a big wheel "race off" and call it thinning the herd.

LAWNMOWERS!!!
Around my neck of the woods lawnmower racing is quite common. They have classes ranging from stock all the way up to ex-mod (where people have been known to easily clear 90mph).

Run the race in a junk yard.

I like the school bus transition.

You could recycle Jay's approach from the Infineon Pinewood Derby: throw the losers in the recycle bin. That's thinning the herd Soylent Green style.
