Topic: Looking for a part

I think I've figured out how to work with what I have but I thought I'd toss this to all you junkyard scroungers just in case.

I need a manual steering rack and pinion.

19" between the inner pivots

Front steer

Center input shaft, not offset.

Any ideas?

Right now the best I've got is
22" with center input. rear steer but it seems I can just flip it upside down and make it front steer, it works in that position.  Still too wide (can you say bump steer boys and girls?) but I may be able to fix that.

Re: Looking for a part

This should help  http://www.woodwardsteering.com/techinfo.htm   EMPI sells some center steer racks for as low as 100 bucks. If you are thinking junk yard racks then a 80'audi S5000 may work.

Center steer is unfortunately crap for steering geometry.  I have a Latest rage end steer buggy rack here but its a bit narrow (16") and the buggy racks do not have a great deal of travel to them so they wont turn very tight.

Any idea what the width on the Audi rack is?

Re: Looking for a part

The rack is end to end about 20 inch's maybe a little less. I think the early Audi fox had the same setup but was not power so it may be a better choice.

Cool, thanks, I'll try to take a look at that, might just do the trick.

That would have been a porsche 911 rack

Ah, I was thinking of what else has a center input and couldn't come up with anything..  It makes sense you already had one.

What year?  it seems to me that the rack in my 66 912 is shorter than 22", but I may just be mis-remembering.

Actually I think you are correct, the pre 68 rack may be narrower, I seem to remember reading that somewhere but I think it was at the wrong end of short, I'll have to reinvestigate.  Ours is a 68+ rack

Makes sense I had one?  I'm not a porsche guy (Id *like* to be) but somehow on this build cheap p-car parts keep sourcing themselves.

Re: Looking for a part

Formula Mazdas (the old steel chassis ones) use a rack like what you need.  I might have one laying around; if you really need it let me know and I'll try to find it.  Or, find a FM racer who might have a bent one that could be straightened.

If it ain't broken, fix it 'til it is.

If you wouldnt mind getting a measurement between the 2 inner pivots Id appreciate it.

The 911 rack works fine, its just too wide.  I have a plan to make it fit if needed but other options are always appreciated.

Re: Looking for a part

Is steering box/center link/idlers  an option?  Narrowing or widening a center link is probably easier than narrowing a rack.   If you run two idlers  and a center link you could use almost any rack or box.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
