Topic: Southern Discomfort Roundup

The race for the IOE wasn't so exciting, as the shockingly non-terrible LeSabre ran away from the competition early on; the prerace IOE favorite was the dragged-from-a-swamp-3-days-prior mid-80s automatic Accord, but it fell apart as soon as it realized it was on a race track. The de-body-fied Lincoln Town Car (above) looked like a strong IOE contender at first glance, but proved incapable of moving under its own power for more than 10 minutes without breaking and/or picking up a black flag.

The overall-win competition, however, was quite exciting. On Saturday, the BoomPow Surprise Ford Probe- ominous black cloud of cheating suspicion hanging over it all the while- looked to be running away from the competition early on, but the engine let go during the afternoon; meanwhile, the long-suffering ex-SVX drivers in the Team Top Gear 200SX showed that they can, like, actually drive when their car doesn't suck... but losing all but third gear knocked them out of contention. On Sunday, the action never stopped: The South Of The Border GTI, Endurance Karting Miata, and Robin Bank Racing Saab 900 stayed within a few laps of one another all day. The Red Rocket team tantalized us with the possibility of an Escort win, lurking in second for much of the early going, but back-to-back black flags torpedoed their checkered-flag hopes. Late in the day, fuel stops and an extremely unfortunate mental error by the Miata's driver during a wave-through-the-Penalty-Box first-offense black flag handed the lead to the Saab.

The weather sucked, officially knocking the '07 Arse Freeze off the Most Miserably Cold Lemons Of All Time pedestal, but at least we didn't get rain during the race itself. We learned that you don't need 100-degree temperatures for CMP racers to fry their brake pads and/or calipers; the engine carnage was top-notch.

We saw the first-ever Lemons Mitsubishi Diamante, which vaulted right onto the short list of Most Terrible Lemons Cars We've Ever Seen. The nightmarishly great E30ata had the Organizer's Choice race sewed up from the start (now we need to see an E30 with Miata front body parts) and was driven extremely well. No cars from the 1970s survived to take the Highest Placing 70s Contender award, so the designed-in-the-70s '83 280ZX "Super Bird" went home with that one.

Lemons HQ did a very poor job of organizing and promoting the first-ever Lemons Chili Cookoff, but we still had three entries- just what we needed after a freezing-ass day in the Penalty Box. Texas racers, get your chili gear packed up for the Gator-O-Rama! We'll do a better job of getting the word out, choosing a location, etc. next time.

The Teach Chantelle How To Drive Stickshift Penalty turned out to be even more spectacular than we'd hoped. For Texas, we may have to do the first-ever Teach Some Random 12-Year-Old How To Do A Proper Burnout penalty; what could possibly go wrong?

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

GREAT penalty.....I'd guess since she hangs out around racetracks..she probably knows how to drive!!

The 12 year old burnout is a GREAT IDEA.....I have a 12 er 13 year old who would love to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   He would gladly volunteer for any CA race I'm at!!

BUT if you really want to torture someone...make them race HIM in a video game....damm that kid is fast....& they can't go back on track until they beat him...of course the judges pick the cars and courses...I'll even volunteer my PS3-

Or if you really want to embarrass someone I could bring the 8 year old....

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

Thanks for the kind words fellas. Had a great weekend even spite the shitty weather Thurs/Fri.

I have to say I was very happy/disapointed at the same time. Sunday when it came time to turn in our Curse ballots .... the team drew a blank.

EVERYONE ... up to that point had raced at least our team clean the whole day, we had give and take from everyone .... it was amazing.

So for that I was very happy, and we threw our ballot away, but also disapointed because I didnt see anyone crushed.

Hell of a good job to all the teams out there this weekend at CMP, this was our 2nd race and we ended up 4th. Had a fun weekend drinking and racing with yall.

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

We had a blast! Couple of notes:

Laying in an inch of ice water in the bitter cold rain for 30 minutes while I sawzalled/grinded/welded on the exhaust to pass tech sucked ballz. BIG THANKS to RobL and the gang from Schumacher for the welder and the help!

Posting the fastest lap of the day on Saturday showed there's hope for the Mark VIII yet. And I did it with a broken rear sway bar, a non-disengageable trans, and severely flat-spotted front tires! Previous driver didn't mention the flat spots. One was into the steel belts...

To the BMW driver who tagged my right rear in turn one at about 11:30 Saturday, i know it was accidental. I saw you come in way too hot and try to squeeze inside at the apex. That curb makes you bounce and lose control, remember?. I gave you the whole track to work with, and you still nailed me. Fine. We were in 8th and moving up fast, and you got us black flagged. Stuff happens. However, when you nail someone who tried to evade your blunder, first thing a classy racer does is own it. You could have told the judges what happened, and sent me on my way. You clammed up and refused. That's a real dick move. We consider cursing your car, but we turned the other cheek. One penalty is all it takes to knock another team out of contention, so it really reflects poorly on one's character when you don't admit fault and let your victim get back out there.

I finally had my first deserved black flag! Went four off in t1 with brand new brakes that weren't seated. Told Johnny HELL YES I DESERVED IT!

Great job by all. Can't wait for Gingerman!

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

Thanks for the props Judge Phil! The SVX wasn't THAT terrible until we took it off the trailer. The Sentra was about 10000 times better car. Way less breakage, way smaller, and you can SEE out of the damn thing!

Having the lead for a while was a great feeling! There is a LOT to be said about staying out of trouble both in front of you and behind you.

New Rules in Lemons racing.....

#1. When you see that big ass Lincoln Town car-ish #69 coming up behind you, GET OUT OF HIS WAY!!!!! HE thinks the thing is fast and that he can drive!

#2. Don't bring an SVX to a race.

we gave away/ate all of Rob's chili on Friday, and had none left for the contest on Sat night.

I missed all day Sunday, but did they give the "Peoples Curse" to anyone? If so do you have pictures?

I made the trophy.  I didn't want it back so I took myself out of the contest.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

That was great chili, Rob!  Thanks much.  And you were right-4 drops of that hot sauce was at least two drops too many.  I think my eyes are still watering!

I can tell you it is NOT a good idea to scarf down 2 bowls of chili BEFORE you go out for a 2 hour stint.

Fall South 09- 23rd place
Southern Discomfort '10 Magnum PU- 5th place
Spring South '10- 1st...... LOSER!

Four plates of BBQ the night before and then a bacon egg and cheese sandwich before driving in the morning wasn't a great plan on my part either. Sunday I skipped eating altogether until the lunch break.

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

Here are my notes:

E-30ata was a great group of guys to hang around.  We would get close to catching them in the standings and then get a black flag.  Just as we caught back up, another black-flag.  Seemed to go on all weekend.  Cool theme and a good attitude, they deserved the Organizers Choice Award.

Didn't get a chance to dice it up with the Police Brutality car while I was out there which was a bummer since our two cars seemed about equal in power.  Also didn't get a chance to give you grief about your cheaty-ass car until the end of the event. Was afraid of how you would take the grief but after meeting you, I’m sure you would have taken it as it was meant (in good fun.)

Track Pillagerz! Buick LeSabre was super cool and surprisingly quick.  Deserved the IoE award.

Lady of Perpetual Down force is still my favorite car.  Great car, theme, and costumes.  Guys on the team are pretty cool too.

Did get a chance to mix it up for a few laps with the RBanks Volvo at the end of day one.  I think I had a touch more power but they were better in the corners.  You got around me, I got back in front, and then you took the lead again.  Good stuff.

Several teams throughout the weekend came up to us to give us props on how fast our car was.  Everyone was cool and had only positive things to say (well, except for the “F’ that Z, we are faster than them” comment I heard a team say while looking at the times.)

We also threw away our People Curse ballot.  We all agreed than no one deserved it this race.

Lastly, the judges are not nearly as cynical and sadistic as they try to portray themselves as – well, except for that fucking puzzle penalty.

Not only is it a classy move, but I'd bet that it buys a certain amount of leniency from the judges. At least the first time.

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

the puzzle penalty is great...next time they should use the pieces of someone's borked engine.  "reconstruct this conencting rod, and you can go back out."

congrats on getting your Z to the finish line...i'm sure i wasn't the only one who figured "a Z that fast, cannot last."  that car has come a long way since it first showed up at CMP.

+1
When I nailed the Beemer, the first thing I told the Judge was it was all my fault.  He said it was usually a joint effort, and I told him it was 100% me.  He let the other team go, and cut us a break....

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

Except for the weather on Friday, this has got to have been some of the most fun we had at a race.  The only way it could have been better is if our conrod bearing replacement had held up for more than an hour and a half.  Now we just need to find another engine for Our Lady to run the next race.

I'd like to thank everyone who was able to avoid me during my occasional lack of car control.  I can only wish that we had some in car video to show you what steering shenanigans were going on.

We'll have prints of our Bob Ross for sale at the next race.

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

hey guys!

It was great getting to troll around the pits looking for grills to Pillage, but even better meeting some of you all in person. I've been doing this since flatrock07, and it took a lot of good people and good luck to actually stand around and shoot the shit. especially the schumacher taxi service guys & Police brutality (seriously schumi guys, we going for MikeVsBuick next? hahahaha)

Despite not getting quite the temperate escape from super-frosty Ohio, It still was a boat-load of fun. I'm VERY happy with you guys who thought taking me in the corners 3-wide was a bright idea, then began questioning it just enough during the turn (usually the lefty) to keep all of us from visiting Johnny & Phil & Jay at the same time.

I'm still geeked & in shock at the IOE win. Honest-to-god I was hoping for a least horrible yank tank or an organizer's choice award. Trying to win a race with a buick is just crazy fun all-around! I'll be really happy to see you all again at gingerman, with a reinforced tail and less melty brakes -I hope!

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

The *ahem* second time I went all four off, I went for the "anti-whining" spin and started boasting.

"Hell yeah I went off and I'm gonna go off again just because I liked it so much!"

We got off light and only had to paint the hood pink... (sorry jeff)

Re: Southern Discomfort Roundup

This was my first race, and with the Schumacher team I had a great time.  Thanks to all who didn't hit me.  We had a good car (even without either boost or 2nd gear) and had a few good periods of racing folks.  No contact and only one spin for me.

Duff beer team was both my savior and bane of my existence on Sat night.  Great beer, but poor sleep for me after that!  If the weather had been more 'average' it would have been a near-perfect weekend.  But good times all around.
