Topic: Fuel cell location in 3rd gen Camaro
So I am in the process of building a Lemons car out of a really crappy 1983 Camaro. We have ditched the stock fuel tank for a bunch of reasons and I am looking at mounting a fuel cell in the car.
So my options are:
1) Mount a small fuel cell in the stock location. This has a ton of issues due to the goofy size of the original tank. Honestly not the best idea.
2) Mount a larger fuel cell in the floor pan low and behind the axle. Generally I would be ok with this but the Lemons rules seem to disfavor locations too far rearward or too low. Plus a larger fuel cell would put a lot of weight really far back in the car. Kind of worried about the affect on handling, as if the 3rd gen camaro won't be crappy enough.
3) In looking at all of the room in the cabin behind the front seats it looks as if I can mount an FIA approved fuel cell behind the front seats and ahead of the axle and and ahead of the stock fuel tank location. Advantages to this would be far less cutting, the fuel cell would be within the cage but not structural to it, the mass of the tank/fuel would be within the wheel base, fabrication would be substaintially cheaper and quicker.
So does anyone have experience in doing this? In reading the rules I can't see why this would not pass tech, but maybe I missed something?
Thanks
