Topic: Ford 2.0 L Zetec I4

Does anyone know if this is an interference engine?  I have a line on a Contour for cheap, but I can hear the timing belt starting to come apart and hitting the upper timing belt cover.

A quick web search tells me that the zetec is a NON-interference engine, but the duratec in an interference engine.

Re: Ford 2.0 L Zetec I4

Found a couple repair sites that state that it is an interference engine with big warnings to such for timing belt replacement.  Looks like I need to inspect the belt before trying to drive it anywhere.

More research reinforces the non-interference claim, but hey, it's the interweb, so I'm sure I could find a website that says the sky is green and dinosaurs still roam the earth.

I think the repair sites are Chiltons based.

Found a great replacement write up that says non-interference.

Zetec is non interference and the factory timing belt interval is 120K miles

Re: Ford 2.0 L Zetec I4

CAn it be changed to a chain instead of a damned belt?

BAH!  My Toy 4x4 belt was supposed to be changed every 60k and the current belt has 163k on it.  As long as it's a non-interference engine, push it till it breaks.  tongue

Re: Ford 2.0 L Zetec I4

my belt on my zx2 went at 116k, but it was a tensioner that screwed me.

I was glad that it's non interference.

So while you're replacing the belt you should get it ported and add a set of high light long duration cam shafts...

Here's the engine running.  It recently started making this noise.

I removed the inspection cover and the belt appears very loose.  Maybe it jumped a tooth.  Think it's fixable or should I pass?

Re: Ford 2.0 L Zetec I4

...you're asking the same community that a car with a JBwelded engine has raced and placed 3rd in whether a slipped timing belt on a non-interference engine is fixable?

...you know what, just get a front clip from a lincoln continental and shoehorn in the drivetrain...preferably behind the driver.
