Topic: Paint

I did a search but didn't find anything...

What is the best way to go about painting the car without making it look like absolute ass?  Knowing that we're too lazy to be pulling body panels off and painting them individually....what's your strategy?  Paint brushes, rollers, sprayers?  Ralph Lauren, PPG, or Rustoleum?

Re: Paint

No matter what you do, you will look like an ass so have fun and start painting!

We are the people your parents warned you about.

Josh painted the Snoopy van with the "Krylon touch" mind you Josh has had experience "painting" in his juvenile/adolescent past.

I see some pretty nice designs out there, like that 85 Mustang.  I'm doubting that's rattlecan...

Re: Paint

We're 100% rollers and house exterior paint.

A coat of urethane to give it it's glossy shine.  We even sprinkled glitter on it!

Re: Paint

We've had really respectable results spraying rustoleum cut 50/50 with thinner out of a cheapo HF HVLP gun and mini pancake compressor. Granted, olive drab is fairly forgiving...

That van took a whopping 20 minutes to spray. 1 coat (over black base).

Re: Paint

We used Rustoleum applied with a smooth foam roller and it came out fantastic.  The car shines and looks great even up close.  The ONLY prep we did was to wipe off the grease and oils that had accumulated during the build.  We painted over the old paint, primer and rust.

Re: Paint

Another vote for rollers/rustoleum. Porcubimmer was done with that method, as was my blue Camaro. Both look bitchin'

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

Exterior latex house paint, craft store tempra paint and brushes.  Nothing but the apex of sophistication.

I sprayed a cheapo baja bug a few years ago with rustoleum through a gun and had great results. Did a lot of prep, though.

Re: Paint

Pah, paint? Rust is free (though the grinding wheels weren't). For our first race we just intentionally rusted part of the car and wiped the worst of the moss & lichen off the sides. Yep, actual moss was on the car.
For the parts of our cars that are painted, we've done:
(1) $35 of "real" auto paint through a spray gun, which covered about 85% of the car. Looked too pretty.
(2) Rattle-cans and stencils. Too laborious.
(3) Rattle-can primer followed by roller-applied parking-lot-stripe paint. Best choice yet, though unlike Jeff we didn't bother sanding it so ours has the same finish as your living room wall.

Re: Paint

We did ours with some now-illegal-in-the-state-of-california 2-stage semi-gloss paint that was given to us, and an hplv gun.  Scotchbrite pad to scuff existing (badly deteriorated) paint and give the surface some tooth, then shoot away.  No sanding, no clearcoat.

Looked great - till we peeled our numbers off the door after Thill in Nov, and some paint came with it - mainly areas where we didn't do a good job scuffing/de-greasing the existing paint - like corners or other crevices.

Great learning experience, lots of fun, looked great - for a while.

Don't be surprised, however, if you get some dirty looks from guys who've worked hard developing their patina.  "Pretty" cars aren't generally received with open-arms - doubly so if the car isn't interesting to being with.

Hey now!  Where did you see anything about sanding in my post?  We simply wiped the grease off.  We rolled over rust and other nasty stuff.  What we couldn't reach with the roller, we brushed.  What's sad is that from more than 10 feet away, it's the best looking vehicle I own.

Re: Paint

I also used Rustoleum a roller and brush

I tried to sand out the car but it was hopeless.

There was Bondo, fiber glass patches, spray foam and some welding involved to have enough body to actually paint.

I also like to thin and spray Rustoleum or similar paints through a gun.

The Mustard Yellow Volvo Doing 45 In The Fast Lane gets painted with Rustoleum in a garage, after about 15 minutes of masking.

Re: Paint

Cheap spray-paint from wal-mart works great.

Oh, I didn't assume you sanded before painting-- that's just crazy talk-- but from the picture it looked like your final paint was vaguely smooth, so I assumed you sanded the worst of the roller-induced texture off. My bad! (we all know the folklore about assumptions.)

Our parking-lot stripe paint was thick enough that the roller gave the car a nice nubby texture.

Re: Paint

Just leave the car out where some taggers can get to it. If you are lucky, you might get some of those nice graphics you see on train cars. If unlucky...

Re: Paint

2 coats of water based color and 2 coats of clear gave the Gone in 60 Laps that proper 1973 baby poop hue.  Undercoating flat black on the hood topped it off.  Time constraints prevented us from doing the black on the lower half of the car.  We'll do that for August Thunderhill!
