I found a geo storm for a good price, seems to run well too. Anybody have any first hand or spectator experience with these?

The Storm is a rebadged Isuzu Impulse. We've seen a few Impulses and at least one Storm. Reliability record hasn't been great, but we're looking at a small sample size here.

go with something you know how to fix and is running when you get it.

how critical is the first part?

If it moves and shouldn't, use Duct Tape.
If it should move and doesn't, use WD-40.
If those don't work, its BROKE!
