Topic: Looking for opinions...

Hey all,

Newb here, never raced anything bigger than a ride on tractor, but have automotive experience. I'm looking at starting a team with some friends for the 2011 season. In the process of locating a noble steed, came across this:

I will admit I am a bit partial to 'Merican Arn, but does this suit the what-the-hell factor?

Re: Looking for opinions...

Re: Looking for opinions...

Yes, the Judges would LOVE that.  Go nuts though and convert to mid engine RWD.  Put a handle on the roof and go with the Dustbuster theme.

Re: Looking for opinions...

I was thinking similarly- mid-engine, preferably something notoriously unreliable. A Caddillac 4-6-8 would be interesting (and possibly a good deal of work...)

Re: Looking for opinions...

Jaguar V12, you got the room for it big_smile

Ya got space, might as well fill it with something ridiculously large.

How 'bout a big old diesel truck engine?

I think it was a crisis-ler

Yee-Haw 2010 "Most Heroic Fix" & "I Got Screwed" -2 trophies for 1 lap, but I took checkered on my lap.
Gator-O-Rama 2012 "Organizers Choice" -2 laps 1 trophy, but i still finished ahead of an E30
Yee-Haw 2013 No trophy -26 laps, I think I see a pattern here
Gator-O-Rama 2014 "Waiting for the Last Minute Call from the Governor Award" -who's counting? John

8-71 Detroit Diesel. The trouble is finding one for less than $10,000.

Re: Looking for opinions...

Toronado FWD with cradle and all mounted in the back - weld up the tie rod ends so it won't steer.  455 cubic inches of Olds torque, might even wheelie!

Re: Looking for opinions...

If you're gonna go that route, you might as well go big with a 500cid Cadillac Eldorado FWD setup.

Re: Looking for opinions...

That would work, same drivetrain.  The Olds may be easier to get cheap parts to upgrade or adapt since there was more out there.

Re: Looking for opinions...

The Silhouette came with a Buick V6, which means the supercharged 3800 should be a bolt-in. You can get trashed-but-running Bonneville SSEis and other blown GM front-drivers for next to nothing. Buy an engine donor car, sell off everything you can from van and parts car, and be the first team to run a supercharged minivan. There are no weak points in this scheme!

Re: Looking for opinions...

Run twin supercharged 3800's!
