my mother's been a part of my dad's and my racing for as long as we have been racing. she needed no convincing. granted, just showing up with a car in the driveway left no room for objection.
I am the wife
I think I have to hide the Fiat somewhere NOT in my driveway for several weeks before the words "Miami race" are breathed in my house.
The thing that is the hardest is when the wife bitches about you working on the car last minute.only because every time you try to work on it before last minute she gives you a rashion of shit!

What really sucks is putting up w/ their shit and not being able to work on the car because something came up.
I just do it all last minute and live by the motto: "It's better to beg for forgiveness than ask for permission."

My wife has driven with us. She is an evil person.
Cost me double to race. I ended up doing double the work on the car since she wouldn't get her hands dirty. And then she turns around and makes it my fault that we are spending too much on racing and I'm not spending time with her.
YES
The LeMon car became the object of resentment. She got over the embarrassment of a beat up car on jack stands when she saw me having so much fun. She got tired of the 20-40 hours a week spent on it, the constant disarray of our little garage, and the consumption of my thoughts. She had no interest in any of the silly theme ideas or helping (although she was super about lunches and stuff that would let me get right back out). After getting her to race karts with my family, I know better than to attempt to get her to race.
She saw lots of the negative and demoralizing experience I had coming, which was the nail in the coffin. There's no question for me about doing it again with a long list of lessons learned, but it's a subject she still won't hear anything about.
This is why I recommend purchasing the services of a good florist. And maybe a jeweler. Just include it in budget as "spouse maintenance cost" and it's a safety item.
My wife has horses. Her "hobby" costs more than my "hobby." It's the ultimate get out of jail free card. Well, that and the fact that the car has yet to need an emergency mechanic to come out at 3 in the morning...
This weekend my wife went to the shop with us. We had to replace the clutch and look at the flywheel. Turned out the starter was loose. It was making a very bad noise when cranking over.
ANy way, all 4 of us from the team took the car apart. My wife helped drop the exhaust, drive shaft. Help me re move the front struts- springs. And put everything back together. The 4 of us put about 6 hours each into the car. She has the greasy fingernails to show she did the work..
Not her favorite thing to do , But she is willing to jump in and help.
Jay should give wife, or spouse awards, to encourage and reward such behavior.
+1
The Air Force does stuff like that and my wife loves it.
Most Heroic Husband/Wife Award.
It might even start a new competition.
I don't even talk about working on the car.
2 things you can try:
#1: Tell her to shut up !!! Get in the kitchen and make another sandwich.
#2: If that does not work she can be like my wife. All the years of racing each time I go away she just goes out and spends $$$ on whatever she wants. New dishes, new clothes, new whatever. I have no leg to stand on so when I come back no complaints from me. Works for us. Been married 24 years.
My wife is used to me becoming obsessive over car stuff. While this is my first Lemons car, I have built many drag and street cars, and compared to what I spent on them, this thing is a drop in the bucket. Plus I think she likes when I am out in the shop and not bugging her. She does not give a rats ass about cars, but I am sure she will be at the track having a few beers with everyone.

^^^This
would get me a bullet in the brainpan
Mine is tired of it and I haven't been to a 24 race yet! She thought it was enough that I take my daily driver to SCCA time trials and talk about it for weeks afterward.
Every time I show her a great (for 24) car on ebay or Craigslist, she simply asks, "Where would you park and work on it?" Sadly, she is correct -- I could get away with having one here for a weekend, but it would get towed away on Monday.
On the other hand, she doesn't complain about my activities (other than to point out practical matters). She has hobbies which she spends lots of time and money (all hers) on. Besides collecting fountain pens, she knits. I'm sure many of you know about wives with knitting habits. But did you know that there are such things as Sock Knitting Conventions? She and a friend drove to Portland, OR (from Los Angeles) to attend one, where they had 3000+ attendees! Yes, our car obsession may take over the garage and much of our life, but a wife who knits can fill the house with bags and boxes of yarn. It's a fair trade-off. Think of it as peaceful co-existence. :-)
Rent a ride with some team. Wait til you run a Lemons race. She'll be reaching for the duct tape to shut your piehole. It's worse than crack. For real.
MY wife is one of the team drivers. She helps with the car prep when she can and is pretty quick on the track. Best way to keep the wife happy is to let her share in the fun.
My wife and daughter came to MAM with me. Now my wife is insisting that she be a team member next time.
Gentlemen (and ladies)
Your approach is simply wrong! The proper approach Is called the lesser of evils.. Do it completely in secret. Give it a name that will instill instill jealousy.. IF your old girlfriend was named Heather or Tiffinany, that's what you refer to your car as. Do so in wispered tones.. (ladies refer to the car in your old boyfriends name) Make sure it's one they are aware of..
You are never going to work on the car.. You and the guys ar going out, or you're going over to Tiffiny's place.. The car doesn't need a new clutch, it needs a new necklace. Tires are shoes,etc..
Now this is the get out of jail free card!
Paint the car first!. and then on it someplace write, "thanks (Your wife's name) for the support"..
If you're working at your houseThis will be tough to pull off.. You have to play really dirty, lock the garage door and only you keep a key. Cover all the windows..
You're goal is to have her hire a private detective or use her girlfriends (even more powerful) to check up on you..
The absolute best trick of all is to get her friends involved tell them it's for her.. but it has to stay a secret..
All of this time, she's burning with jealousy and her friends are acting wierd, you're acting secretive.
When she finally does find out She will be yours forever!
Nothing reforms a nag like fear of loss that is completely unfounded..
You're goal is to have her hire a private detective or use her girlfriends (even more powerful) to check up on you.
No, she'd just murder me in my sleep and be done with it.
