Topic: Kill switch remote cable

Due to the dash and cowl contstruction of the lincoln, combined with the stock battery placement, the best way for us to do the kill switch was to place it like our pca/nasa cars.  It is under the hood, operated by a cable, clearly marked red handle, lightining bolt sticker, in easy reach of safety crew and driver.  The handle is mounted right where they would look for the switch handle.

In the strictest sense of the rules the handle is where they wanted the switch, not the switch itself.  Will this pass tech at a Lemons event?

Re: Kill switch remote cable

If you can run a cable, you can run a wire.

You are only entitled to the space you occupy.

Re: Kill switch remote cable

Sure, mounting one thin cable and a handle is exactly like 2ga wire x2,  10ga wire x2, mounting the big ass switch, then having all of the amps from the whole car in that spot.

It's legal in every other sanctioning body we've run, because it is safer than choosing a less than ideal mounting spot and something the driver can't operate.

I am just looking to verify it isn't a Lemons thing that is different from everyone else.

Re: Kill switch remote cable

The switch or Lever needs to be in plain site as per rules, with labeled lightning bolt, and on/off or Kill. Not under a hood or under the drivers left butt cheek. Plain site and easily Identifiable.

Where the actual killing mechanism is located is up to you.
If you use a relay or cable that actually kills the car is not the point.

When you flip the switch the engine must die! and all accessories must die with it.

So if you can run the wire or cable from the actual kill mechanism to the outside of the car or in plain site, and the tech inspectors can activate a proper kill, then by all means make it happen.

Re: Kill switch remote cable

Paul's onto something there. Just run a linkage from the switch that you are mounting underhood to another kill switch lever on the cowl and then you'll be all set. Plus the downside of a wire to your lever is that you can't push the wire and make the kill switch go into the "on" position again.

Re: Kill switch remote cable

Sorry for the confusion, the "Wire" would be a small 16 to 18 gauge wire that would activate a larger relay or even a Servo device that would trip the power.

Off Note...
I was just thinking you could use a wiper motor at a remote location to activate or switch pretty much anything you wanted.

Re: Kill switch remote cable

We put our kill switch inside on the cage within easy reach of the driver. This put it way too far from the right side of the car, so we ran a T handle cable to the right side, clearly marked just like the switch. Passed tech and I felt a lot better about it.

Generally, the common red plastic kill switch handle has to be pushed in slightly before it will turn on. That means you'd have to raise the hood to turn the thing back on. There are NHRA spec kill switches that have a rod with a push/pull T handle, like this one:

I dunno if that would work for you.
