Topic: Tires

Got another question. What do the great minds of the Lemon Heads think between tires.  We are looking at the Falken Azenis and the Dunlap Star spec in a 205 50r15 versus the BFG G-force  sport in a 215 50r15.  The BFG has a 380 tread wear versus 200 for the Flaken and Dunlop.  We are pulling our hair out trying to decide.  We were told the bigger the tire the better. Please help.  Oh ya, the tires are for our 260z

Thanks

Re: Tires

Star Spec.

Much better tire than the other two. The difference in compound will more than make up for the slightly narrower tire.

Re: Tires

+1  We have 195/60R14 RT615s on our 260Z and they are great.  I'm sure the 205's would be even better.  Ours wear perfectly even and last a long time.  A set would easily last for a 24 hour race without rotating.  We added just a bit of camber by moving the front LCA pivot points up 3/4" and out 1/4".  Any more out than that and you'll run out of tie rod travel.

I've read great things about the grip of the Star Specs, but I don't know if they wear as well.

We've done 3 full races on our Star Specs and aren't even down to the wear bars.

Re: Tires

We generally get about one full race out of the Azenis @ CMP.  We have two sets so we can run last race's keepers on the back.  Heard lots of good things about the star specs and will probably try them next since the cost about the same in 14".

Re: Tires

That's great to hear.  We'll have to try the Star Specs the next time we buy tires.

Re: Tires

We just went to the 205/50r15 Dunlop Star Specs from the 225/40r14 Toyo T1Rs.

We are slightly faster on the Dunlops but my guys think the car understeers more on the Dunlops that the Toyos.

Toyo discontinued the 25/40r14 back in 2008 so even if we found some they would be old.

We are happy with the Dunlops but I wish they were wider.

Re: Tires

We ran approx 35 hours at CMP on Kumho AST.  Tread wear of 400.  Yes, Fred Flintsone would approve of their hardness, but they did last and we could probably still run them if we wanted to.  We have been hooked up with Maxxis MA-V1.   Price was right and a 300 tread wear.  We'll see.

Re: Tires

Thanks to everyone for the comments on the tires. Looks like we will be getting the Dunlops.

Were you in the 2nd gen RX-7?  I have the same AST's on my street car and I couldn't imgaine running them on the track.  We run the Azenis in the prety much the same scenario as the OLPDF guys.  We buy new fronts each race and runs the used fronts in the rear.  Now that the 615Ks have gotten so expensive I'm sure we'll switch to the Dunlops for the Miami race.

Nope, 1991 Escort.  RX-7 is too fancy for us.  We finished 14th on the Kumhos in the Spring 2009 race.  Clean living there.
