Topic: Our new addition

We gave a little thought to Life After Wartburg and I owe the team a car.  Well a few months ago a posting came up on GRM for a 1980 MGB rolling shell with a 1/2 cage for $100

The seller was local(ish) and I figured I couldnt go wrong so I made the deal sight unseen and thanks to the prolific amounts of snow we didnt get to pick it up until today.

During our wartburg work we discussed drivetrain options, and the team is really pushing for magic spinning triangles.  Well, we go to get the car and it has 2 ratty but possibly usable racing seats in it, an older but usable spax tube shock conversion on it, rear swaybar, and it appears that it was previously converted to rotary power so all the necessary chassis mods are done.   It also came with just enough spares/unnecessary parts that we should be able to sell it down to $0 to start.  The roll bar is of unknown/questionable quality so we'll just cut that out and start over to be safe.

Coming to a Lemons event in 2011.  After the warburg this one just seems easy.

Re: Our new addition

Cool car. $100 was a steal!

I had a guy offer me a 1970 Triumph GT6 for $400 the other day. I need to go see it. No 3rd gear, but clear title, and supposedly it's a runner.

Re: Our new addition

Yeah, for $100 I just couldn't say no.  It doesn't peg the weird scale like some other cars I've been eyeballin but its a nice combo of effluence and fun.

I know where I can get a hold of a disassembled GT6 motor if you go for it.  We almost stuck it in the MG just for a combination of British bizarreness but my team insists on a nuclear keg this time around.  But seriously, you gotta start leaving some cars for the rest of us wink

Re: Our new addition

I'm tripping over IOE cars, yet I keep finding more. I kept posting them in the For Sale forum, but no one was buying them.

Re: Our new addition

Yeah, I keep stumbling on them too.  Its sad when I look at this MG and realize we could finish it in 2 good weekends and yet I have 2 months and I dont think the Wartburg will be done.  Everything will seem easy after this.

Im still trying to convince myself to not go get the Borgward.  Its in pretty rough shape...which makes it perfect for Lemons.

Re: Our new addition

Just a little update, seems my teammates went out and found a donor car yesterday.  They have opted against the magic spinning triangles and picked out some good old fashioned piston power.

Sadly my earlier idea of swapping in the drivetrain from an Alfa Romeo Milano was shot down sad  But I think they found something fun.  We'll toss up some details once we start building.

Not quite so exotic smile

Here are some of the candidates we considered (and it was just a matter of what we could find in a cheap donor that made the selection)

TurboCoupe 4cyl
SuperCoupe 6cyl
Rotary
Lexus LS 400 (would have been a nightmarish swap)
Alfa Milano
Rustang 5.0
Chevy 4.3 V6

Well I could go on and on actually, we were looking at anything with a FR layout, 5 speed (Lexus was the exception) and a baseline around 170hp or greater.

I kept pushing the weird and tried to go for a mid engine swap (Caddy 500 FTW) but I keep getting reminded that we are going "simple" this year.  Funny how after the wartburg engine swapping an MG seems simple.

Re: Our new addition

We may take the Turbo 2.3/5 speed and put it into our 2002.

Probably a few seasons from now.

Excellent choice.  Sadly not what we ended up with, we missed out on 3 sub $500 turbo coupes.  Sad really 'cause its a great motor.

I desperately wanted to but my team didnt like my idea of a seat mounted to the intake manifold so the driver could still fit.

We were actually thinking this theme

but you may be on to something there, I'll have to mull that over.

Then again our theme gives you the opportunity to see grown men embrace their inner child...and wear diapers to BS inspection.

Re: Our new addition

Wait a minute- your team rejected the idea of dropping a Milano V6 into an MGB? You need new teammates!

Actually everyone loved the idea at first, beautiful engine, beautiful noises, just happened to have a line on a great donor.  Then I mentioned the rear IRS transaxle and the love for the idea quickly dwindled.

"twas not simple enough.  They are really protecting me from myself, I spent so much time on the wartburg that it very nearly has caused a divorce.  So they are trying to not let my wild ideas get too carried away on this one.

Of course we went to visit a friend who unbeknownst to us has also been working on an MG project, 350 Chevy with a Turbo400, narrowed 9inch and custom 4 link, he built it all himself (including narrowing the 9 inch) it was very inspirational, although not quite lemony.

Re: Our new addition

And FWIW the MG is planned to be a long term Lemons car and I cant avoid tinkering so a future iteration may still get that milano motor if I find another donor smile

Oh really?!?  I guess I shouldnt be surprised, it was only a matter of time till someone did it.

Maybe I'll go back to the theme I wanted to do,  now wheres that "questionable" theme thread?

How about an Astron out of a Starion? The least reliable engine in Lemons history coupled with British Leyland build quality should be a great combination.

Having owned/suffered through 3 starions in my life I considered it.  Damn fast motor for the 10-15 minutes its running before something goes wrong.

I think the nice little 225hp mill we found should do just fine in a sub 2000 lb MG wink

That's why I really wanted the Afa motor.  British and italian nightmares melded into one....what could be...better?

Re: Our new addition

Keep it all British!

If you want any hope at all of being Knighted by the queen it simply has to remain properly British..
I have a Jaguar V12 engine and transmission for your entertainment . Since there have been a couple of Miata's with V12's in them  a large MGB would be simple..
(since shipping would likely exceed the $500 limit check your local neighborhood)..  Most of Jagaur's production came here and did so for 25 years the V12 is relatively common. Because of perceieved complexity they are discarded long before they are finished..
Their reputation for unreliability has more to do with those who purchase them than any reality.
Because they are beautiful and exotic they tend to be owned by posers..
Posers don't notice steam coming out from the engine compartment when the neglected hose finally quits. (too busy looking at their profile in the mirrors)..
That or they slam into a giant pothole and wonder why the car quit.. The Impact sensing switch is right under the dash by the hood release.. the little white button on top of the senser will get them magically on their way again! (it's in the owners manual too!) With the tow in a smart mechanic pads the bill enough to make at least one or two boat payments before he pushes the button for them and sends them on their way complaining about Lucas unreliability!
OR they ignore the notices and use regular gas in a car designed for premium becauase their latest investment didn't work out too well.
That causes the head gaskets to blow!. So here's this $5000 car that needs $5000 worth of work at the dealership and I get another engine and transmission for the price of a set of gaskets!
Torque?  That little 326 cu.in. engine has more torque than  a chevy 454!   The transmission is the turbohydro 400 except extremely heavy duty version used in ambulances,  towtrucks, and such trucks
  Ever look at the engine?
With proper care it will easily go 200,000 miles! after 2-300,000 miles simply slide out the old cylinders and put in a totally new cylinder with stock piston.  No machining required to bring the engine back to 100% stock
Giant bearings, great oiling system, (push rods are something for little boys to play with)  The strongest looking block in the land   (looks a lot like one of those 5000 horsepower top fuel motors only with 12 instead of only 8 cylinders)
The rear end is the same one used in 427 Ford Cobras and even in race conditions stands up to massive abuse! (In fact Corvette used a version of the same (DANA 44) rear end for a while)  Also used in "cuda's" etc..
