Topic: Anybody had experience with gas tank sealers?

My '66 Dodge A100 van sat with a full fuel tank for 12 years, and now the tank has a horrible coating of dirt, rust, and varnish. I'm cleaning it out as well as I can, but I can tell that crap is going to rattle loose once the van starts driving around.

So, I figure this is a problem faced by many Lemons racers (judging by the vast quantity of Lemons cars I've seen sidelined for entire weekends by crap-rattling-loose-in-gas-tank maladies), and that some of you must have found a solution that worked. I'm contemplating pouring in some of that goo that allegedly coats the tank and prevents the clogged-filter-a-day problem. Anyone got advice about preferred brands of goo, etc?

You could give this stuff a try.

I have used that stuff mentioned above in motorcycle tanks with great success.

I've had great success with POR15's kit.  It takes a FULL week to do the job right, but it's worked it multiple cars including our S30 crapcan.  http://www.por15.com/FUEL-TANK-REPAIR-K … info/FTRK/

Let me know if you want the full how-to.  I've done several tanks successfully and they are going strong.

If it's that wicked, why not just cruise the junk yard and find a replacement.

Some junkyards around here spike the tanks.

Put in a fuel cell!

The tank really isn't too rusty inside, but it's full of horrible grit and mysterious solid matter. That's the fuel sender float in the pile of varnishy rust flakes.

Re: Anybody had experience with gas tank sealers?

Take it to a radiator/machine shop, have them hot tank it to clean it out as good as possible, and use the POR15 Jeff mentioned.  Without a doubt, that stuff is solely responsible for half of the Z's on the road running on their own power....

Re: Anybody had experience with gas tank sealers?

I took it to a radiator shop and was told that there's no legal way for anyone in Colorado to dispose of the toxic stuff in the tank. Apparently I need to drive to Wyoming, where there are no environmental laws.

Take a shop vac w/  a filter bag and small hose .

Then put into your trashcan.

There's a way, they just don't want to go to the trouble to research it. Here in Oklahoma, the epicenter of anti-environmentalism, the city has a hazmat center that will take just about any non-commercial waste.

Re: Anybody had experience with gas tank sealers?

on old bike tanks, i would put in some Muriotic acid (pool stuff) you can buy anywhere with some stainless ball bearings. slosh the stuff around, but don't slosh it on yourself. after thoroughly rinsing, dry and throw in some heavy oil to coat the metal. drain the oil and put in fresh gas asap. that is the super lemony alternative to POR15.

Bring it up, we can have a bonfire!

Re: Anybody had experience with gas tank sealers?

After much research i went with this 2 part epoxy. Used it in a rusted motorcycle tank. Very pleased. The stuff is hard aa glass and will not flake off.
DONT USE KREM.
