The 24 Hours of Lemons Forums → Lemons Tech → E30 rev counter signal?
Any E30 guys know where the rev counter gets its signal from, what colour wire etc? It used to work.....now its dead.....checked internal batterys and they are good. We've had to cut and shop wires galore.....just can't seem to find where this one has gone?

his whole team is foreign: Canada, Scotland, Britania.
He is so Clarkson, he thinks Sie Germans are bastards, so he replaced their german engineered wiring with some good old dependable British electronics.

I do try and convert and call the boot a trunk......a bumper a fender and an exhaust a muffler!

So back to the E30......Poweeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
PS - Germans got it all wrong and we are slowly making the BMW what it should have been.......crap!

Ask bam2002 he's a BMW guy.
It's the negative wire from the coil. Can't remember off the top of my head which wire this is at the cluster, but worst case scenario you can just run a new wire.
I know ours came unplugged at some point (91 325I), If I remember it was a small wire, light blue with white or yellow stripe. If you pull off the guage panel it plugs in on the lower left side and is a single wire.
Well, the small blue/white wire rings true for the cluster end.....I didn't realise it went to the coil negative! Excellennt, thanks fellers!
Will see if that works later!

Just some brief feedback...its not working, but I didn't relly have time to get stuck into it! I will try again tonight, and Saturday and Sunday!
Cut your losses and just run a wire to the (-) side of the coil. I pull my tach signal from there (yes...another E30 team....) and it works fine.
Thanks.....I did try and run a wire to the neg side of the coil but Im not convinced I got the right wire selected on the back of the dash?
... Oh dear god in heaven that's a terrible wiring diagram.
So bad, in fact, that I literally can not help you. In fact, if this diagram is right, I will certify as insane the so-called Germans that thought any of this was a good idea.
We usually say that the E30 was the Gemans way of getting back us Brits and you Americans for winning the war! Thanks anyway, I think we are going to try and fit an old aftermarket one that a friend is trying to find!

I figured it out on my '87 325 since I tapped into the wire at the cluster to add a shift light. I'm just too lazy to go look right now, heh.
