Team Pandamoneum tows with a diesel ambulance and it seems to work great.

Forget the trailer!  Bigger rear springs, gut the interior, and stuff the heap right in the back.

That '01 seems like the best deal... if it just needs an injector, that's pretty cheap and relatively easy to replace. And even if it needs an injector pump, that's a <$1500 repair, if you do it yourself.

Vans just suck to work on.  You'd have to drop the engine to do any turbo work.

The Ford powerstroke diesels are a little different. Each injector is its own pump that is operated by engine oil. As such the high pressure fuel pump is about $500 and each injector is about $300. Replacing them in a van is a major PITA since you have to remove the valve covers to get to the injectors. It takes less time to remove the engine and do the repair than try it in chassis.

So what you're saying, then, is that the Cummins is yet again superior? wink

There is a local dirt track team using a Ford like the one originally listed.  They like it, except it passes everything but a gas station.
