Topic: cage legality, here and other leagues.

I found a very affordable pre-bent weld in cage. But it is ERW and not DOM. The specs on it is 1 5/8" OD .134 wall, which if I remember correctly, passes the Lemons and Chump Car leagues tech inspection.

But will this pass other road racing leagues? SCCA, ITA, NHRA (drag racing), ect.???

I know some places really dislike ERW, but I thought they compensate for that in wall thickness and diameter. Same as they let you run smaller OD and less wall thickness if you choose to run Chrome molly instead of DOM tubing.

oh, also the car will only weight about 2000lbs if that adds to the legality of it.

Re: cage legality, here and other leagues.

ERW is not legal in NASA or SCCA.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know. DOM it is!

Did a bunch of google searching. Some places said it was, some said it wasnt. A friend of mine also told me ERW was not legal.

F. TUBING
1. Seamless or DOM mild steel tubing (SAE 1020 or 1025 recommended)
or alloy steel tubing (SAE 4130) must be used for all
roll cage structures. Alloy and mild steel tubing may not be
mixed. ERW tubing is not allowed.

Re: cage legality, here and other leagues.

I love the perpetual myth that any DOM is better than all ERW.   DOM starts as ERW tubing, it just gets pulled through finishing dies with an internal mandrel.

The quality control on DOM is usually tighter though so it has that going for it.
