Topic: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

Just trying to get some new teammates up to speed as far as gear goes.  I'm assuming that the 2011 rules will require SA2005 or newer helmets as the SA2010s will be out by then.  Is this correct, or can they save some money by getting SA2000 helmets?

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

At this point I would assume that sa2000 helmets days are numbered.  If your drivers could wait I'd almost tell them to wait for the sa2010 which I believe is suppose to be out next month and would be good for the longest amount of time.

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

If they are new to racing and need helmets, why would they get SA2000?  At best, they'd be good for one year.  I wouldn't even buy an SA2005 right now unless I got it really cheap.

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

I agree about the 2000, but if a 2005 on closeout is less than half the price of a 2005 it would make sense.

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

This place has the 2005s on sale for $170. Thats about the cheapest I have seen for a SA rated helmet. It would be worth it considering the cost of the 2010 helmets. (250-300 range)

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

AFAIK SA2000 is illegal in 2011.  Snell recommends a 10 year operating life from the standard, so if you want to save a few bucks get an SA2005, no sanctioning body that likes to have insurance is going to allow an SA2000.

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

This last weekend VARA announced that because the 2010 helmets seem to be in short supply and costly, they have extended the 2000 use for 1 year.

Lemons rules are stating SA2005 or SA2010... any movement on this?

Re: 2011 Helmet Eligibility

SA 2000 are out of date and will fail tech in Lemons.

3.4: Driver's Helmet: Undamaged, full-face Type SA helmet, Snell SA2005 or better,

For anyone interested, in December I ordered the Marginally Better "Everything" Kit, and immediately after doing so called Pyrotect, and they were able to upgrade the helmet on the order from the SA2005 to the SA2010 for a mere $50.  Not a bad deal to get an extra 5 years use out of it.
