Topic: Big Rear Wing!

I'm in the middle of fabbing up a rear wing for my 914, but I got to thinking, maybe I'll use it on the Filthy, too?

It's made from thin wall steel conduit and salvaged steel.
Currently weighs 9#'s.

I'll skin it in aluminum flashing fastened with rivets and a 3/4" tall Gurney.

Less than $50~

I have it hanging over the car to mock up the approximate hieght.
1 inch above the trailing edge of the roof.

Wing will be adjustable from zero to ten degrees.

You call that a big wing? A 914 needs real downforce.

Re: Big Rear Wing!

That's not a wing.
That a plane with big landing gear....

sorry about your tiny pink wing, bro.  wink  don't forget to spraypaint your team name and profanity (misspelling both) on it Friday night after most of a bottle of bourbon.

how are you actuating it?  we used the power window motors.

Re: Big Rear Wing!

Isn't thin wall conduit galvanized on the outside?  If so, how are you welding it without making yourself sick?

Edit: Also, won't you have trouble with corrosion if you rivet the aluminum right to mild steel?  I made the mistake of using galvanized nails on some aluminum flashing and it's corroded right through the aluminum in a few places.  (Look up galvanic corrosion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion )  At the least you should use stainless rivets if you can get them.  The aluminum will rot through where it touches the steel.  Kind of like a Land Rover.

It will last for a few years like that, which is enough for Lemons, but your 914 is a little nicer than most of our cars!!

You're welding on the paint? That's a pretty cool technique.

Re: Big Rear Wing!

when i saw the title of this, i thought "what? someone put a DC-9 wing on a crown vic just to out-do Our Lady of Perpetual Downforce?" After clicking i was actually kinda disappointed, although it does look really very nice!
