Topic: cage main halo too short can it be sleeved?

we may have a problem with the cage.

it is a halo type from " broke dick Racing" we welded the main rear hoop to the halo - turns out is too low for proper helmet clearance..my welder  - who is structurally certified - tells me he can add an extension and then sleeve it - the sleeve will attach to the base plate as well as the down tube about 4" above the extension weld covering and encapsulating the extension piece///.

he tells me this is actually stronger?? is this ok or do we need to start over?

also, and I think I already know the answer - the diagaonal cross bar for the rear main hoop can be two pieces joined on a center horizontal support as long as it is one continous run?

is this kosher??

thanks in advance

heres a pic of the extension -- the sleeve will go over this..

Re: cage main halo too short can it be sleeved?

I don't think your allowed to use sleeves for any part of the cage structure, but If you ask John with Evil Genius Racing he can give you a final ruling. You would be better off elevating  the Spreader plate to make up the difference in your cage. Boxed in spreader plates are done when your tying into the door sill.
Here is an example...  http://stickfigureracing.blogspot.com/s … -results=7

Nope to question #2 the Diagonal bar supporting the main hoop must be One continuous piece.

Re: cage main halo too short can it be sleeved?

Do a box foot plate tied in to the sill instead of the extension. More "practiced" than extending the tube as a tube.

Like this:

and the one linked to above

these are often done to get 360 welds over the top of the cage and then boxes shifted underneath and welded in place.

Like what was also said, talk to EvilJohnius for a final ruling.

Re: cage main halo too short can it be sleeved?

Ok thanks so far..i've already gotten a no vote on the sleeves.. so it's either a new rear loop or boxes...

Re: cage main halo too short can it be sleeved?

No sleeves in the main hoop, or any required bar, for that matter.  The only exception is for the sleeved door bars and back stays in a mass-produced bolt in cage.

BTW this is what the cage is supposed to look like as per "Broke Dick Racings" website

no extending or sleeving the main hoop!

build a box like spank suggests. as long as the "spreader plate box" gives 24sq in of surface area(attaching up along the unibody is fine) then they are A-Ok.  As far as I know the main hoop diagonal is allowed to be two-piece, but must be formed in a straight, continous line. If you're building new, however, just make it one piece and save yourself from the possibility it'll be made illegal later. harness bars are not load bearing, so are free to be two-piece, or even half-width if necessary.

Mike,

They pass as long as they cover the required 24" plate requirement.
and they are fully welded completely at all joints connecting to the floor or door sill.
make sure they are thicker than 1/8 inch plate. Preferably 3/16 or 1/4 plate that won't collapse during a impact. If you look at these plates from above both meet the requirements.

Thanks everyone for the input! I think were going to have a new main bar and halo bent...start fresh..

The powers that be aren't too psyched on the box idea...I was told it may pass but it will be heavily scrutinized..
