Topic: New Two Inch Rule problem

Our tallest driver violates the new two inch rule. We lower the seat as low as we could without cutting the stock seat mount. Can we lower the rear seat mount height to make the clearance for the new rule? Does the seat have to be parallel with the floor?

Thanks

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

Nope, you can have the rear be lower than the front.  You might even find that it's a more comfortable driving position.

Having the same problem with our 1st gen. rx7. Can we put 1" thick aluminum blocks under the rear hoop cage plates and under the two angle braces to the rear strut towers? I'm not sure how we will get the padding attached though, can it just be on one side of the tubes?

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

Spacers under the cage would have to be very stout welded in steel boxes and I still think that's not a great idea.  I would take a good look at lowering your seat.  We have one outsized driver and by making the rear seat rail mount very low the seat goes down as it goes back and fits us all.  Cut out the floor if you have to as long as you replace that section when you are done.

Real roll cage padding has a thin side so it fits up against the car so if you do move your cage don't worry about the padding.

We booted our super tall teammate last season in the old Miata.  It would have meant a floor pan chop and rebuild, and well, that guy rarely showed up on workdays anyway.  tongue

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

Yes, you can angle your seat back for more head clearance. I had to do that in my car. Having a side mount seat and adjustable brackets did the trick for me.

You can definitely make "pedestal" boxes to raise up the cage as long as the correct material and area is used.

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

I'm adding a center tube that attaches between the windshield bar and the main hoop.
It will be as tight to the inside of the roof as possible.

I'm adding  12 square inches to each base spreader, as well.

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

We chopped and modified our factory seat mounting to get the kirkey in there and lower than possible with the stock mounts. We need to find some significant room. I think we will end up bolting the seat to the floor to try and get low enough. The problem is we have a hard time seeing the track from sitting that low.

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

Over the years we've rearranged the seat in our Neon a lot, now to the point that our tallest driver only feels like a pretzel some of the time. However, to comply with the two-inch rule with him in the seat, it's finally so low that it feels tough to see the track for shorter team members.
Our stab at a safe solution is nearly ready for a trial run: a big sheet of SFI-approved high density foam from Pegasus divided into several cushions, plus "pillowcases" made from Nomex felt I bought on Amazon. We hope having several cushions sized for the bottom & back of the seat will allow us to fine-tune seating position for each driver.

I finished my cage mods.

I'm working on the pictures.

Added 3x4 verticle spreaders on the sills and main hoop.

The car may have passed without the mods, but why chance it?

I painted everything and will put padding on the center tube.

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

Is that center tube approved by tech? If so I'm copying that.

Re: New Two Inch Rule problem

We have a very similar center bar.  It really helps the safety on tight cars since the roof is always higher in the center than at the side rails.
