Topic: Auto Lemon Union Cage Check

Just received our cage back from the welder's with a week and a half until Sears Pointless '11. I'm looking to the faceless mob to see if any problems need correcting before we head up there. Give me a reason to go yell at my fab guy and earn a beer at the race.

And no, it's not an E30. It's an E28. Totally different and much more unique...

And a couple more added to show the frond/mid spreader plates. I'm not too worried about them.

Design looks good. Can you take some close ups of the spreader plates?
The door bars may slow your egress, so be sure everyone practices getting out in less than 14 seconds from a strapped in position

Looks great.

Only thing I couldn't see are the spreaders at the base.
How large are they?

Looks good, but I agree with John.  The front door bar member looks like it would make egress tough.

Re: Auto Lemon Union Cage Check

Door bars are very high, you will need a removable steering wheel to get out quick enough.

Re: Auto Lemon Union Cage Check

The seat bolsters are wide enough that we can twist and pull ourselves out once the belt is off. If enforcement is just a 14 second egress, we should be able to do it no problem with a bit of practice. I hear yoga helps with flexibility right?

Re: Auto Lemon Union Cage Check

14 sec with full gear on lock down like Hanibal Lecter is not a lot of time for a young athletic thin man such as myself. Throw in real life fire and disorientation from the Le Car that just blew up in front of you, and 15 seconds could mean death.

Dont kid yourself or egress skills. Practice it. They will test you at tech inspection.

In that case, you don't have to be able to get out fast.  You can just stop 30 seconds before the fire starts and calmly exit the car.

Looks nice smile

Make sure that your shoulder harness bar gives you the 0 to -15 degrees for harness straps....it looks like it might be a little high (or seat a little low?).

Re: Auto Lemon Union Cage Check

Sorry if this goes off topic but, if the cage did not have the the top portion of the X that extends toward the front of the car (in the area of the rear view mirror and dash) would it pass tech?

If I recall there is a two door bar rule but can the front be lower than the rear in order to help speed egress?

Also, does that seat pass tech? Looks like one of the myriad sport seats you can order from Jegs or the like.

I was thinking the same, harness bar looks a little too high for a short person

Your rear supports could have gone out farther to the outside for a more straight up and down . Take piccs and send to Nick ,Jay Or Evil genius.

Those doors bars super tall after a 2 hour stint you'll need help out .
During tech get your smallest guy to egress.

Seat looks alright to me. It's racier-looking than the one we use, certainly. Of course, they do need to cut a hole in the squab and route the crotch belt properly.

Your main hoop diagonal is two pieces, Rules state the main diagonal must be one continuous piece.
Per rules your cage will fail. Check with John with Evil Genius Racing for final rule. Sorry!!!

I mentioned the same in another thread and was told most of the time that design will NOT fail tech.  I feel you're better off with a 1-pc diagonal, but as long as the bar is split in the same plane across the harness/bow bar its o.k.  But like SFR said, check with the techs for the final word.

I would gusset the door bars at the X joint personally.  There is a precedent where the split x-style has come apart in a bad t-bone creating nice metal spears.  Luckily they were passenger side bars.

Nice try bender, but no beer for you. Found the rule reference:

Last paragraph on "Notes on Cage Design" section...

Finally, you must have one main-hoop diagonal support--the simplest way to accomplish this is to run a clean, straight tube from the driver's-side top corner of the main hoop to the passenger's side bottom cage-mounting pad at a more-or-less 45-degree angle. This bar will likely intersect your harness bar; you can make either the diagonal or the harness bar from two pieces to deal with that intersection, but the finished two-piece section must still form a very straight, very clean line.

Ummmm.... I have never read that quote from the rule book. Could you link it so all can see.
(If no link.. I want a nice Guinness!) and as before.... check with John he will give you a complete work-up of your cage design.

The quote above is the last paragraph in the "Notes on Cage Design" Section.

We had a 2-piece diagonal that passed and failed Tech.  It failed because it was the incorrect diameter.  When it was replaced the diagonal was one piece, which is now the preferred method.  If you have a 2-piece diagonal it makes the fabrication much tougher as both pieces must form a straight line in both planes.

As a true diplomat, all beers are created equal. I should start a new thread to find out how much beer drinking is acceptable prior to our driving shifts...

Thanks for the input guys.
