Topic: Quick-release steering hub

The car already has a cheap 3-bolt Grant steering wheel on it, I'm thinking of picking up a quick-release as well.  Should make entrance and exit a little easier, and would be a nice anti-joyride feature when I drive the car to work in the summer smile

I have 20 Summit Bucks about to expire, I figure this wouldn't be a bad way to spend them: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LNG-56600/

Anyone used this particular model before?  Would you recommend a different one?  Any advice/tips appreciated.  Thanks.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

A post in the E30 quick release thread said the hex type (like you linked to) had too much slop in them:

I personally have no experience with quick release hubs, though, just passing along the (dis?)info!

Re: Quick-release steering hub

I find that hard to believe as I've seen a ton of real race cars that use the hex style.

I have a coarse splined style quick release and there is a small amount of play between the splines, but not enough to ever notice on the track.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

We have a momo wheel w/ a grant quick release and an adapter between the two. They offer a much cheaper hex+pin quick release that I wouldn't have to get the adapter for (our hub was around $135 and adapter was another $50, on top of the $175 steering wheel) but we have some very tall drivers as well as some with little (ie no) racing experience. For that, I didn't want something to happen and them fuddling around to try to find where the pin is.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

I'm reading elsewhere that the hex style adapters have too much slop in them as well.  Hmph.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

Honestly I have no experience with those but it looks like a cheap piece of junk better suited to a drag car that doesn't do much turning, as opposed to a road race car that would stress it.  JMO.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

I use a hex style quick release on our car and my vintage car and think they work fairly well.  I bought a spline style for another car and it is slightly better in terms of play but not much.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

Between myself and my team members, most of them have hex style quick releases.  We've had no problems.

I think all of ours are the 360 degree Pull Type.

I bought a couple of weld on ones off eBay for next to nothing and they have worked fine.

If you are worried about the slop in that fitting, we are you doing about the rest of your steering?

Re: Quick-release steering hub

We had trouble finding  a cheap steering wheel boss for our E30 to get rid of the standard steering wheel, so I 'LeMon'd up a boss using a bit of steel plate and about 3 inches of square tube (yes, square...it's all I had) by welding the tube to the plate, drilling the required six holes in the plate at the appropriate location and welded the lot onto the steering column - now we can use whatever aftermarket device or wheel we want.....and it even looks like it won't come off in our hands! smile

It ain't pretty though!

Re: Quick-release steering hub

On track, the tiny bit of play in the quick release is not noticeable.  Doesn't matter if it is hex or spline, they all have a little play.

edit: And to answer the OP, we have the very similar Wilwood unit on the GTI:

Re: Quick-release steering hub

I am leaning toward this guy, for the pull-style release: http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/produc … oduct=3400

Plus, it fits my puny 5/8" steering shaft.  Also, my interior is red, so it will match smile

Re: Quick-release steering hub

Update: got the one from Pegasus.  It's actually the same as this: http://www.bicknellracingproducts.com/c … mp;id=1660 for an extra $19 for the privilege of buying it from Pegasus instead of direct from BRP.

Feels nice, but I'm just playing with it on my desk, I'll put it in the car tomorrow.  There's just a microscopic amount of play; feels like if there were any less, it would be hard to separate it.  We'll see how it feels on the car, hope the wheel doesn't magnify it too much.

Re: Quick-release steering hub

We use the hex type. No problem at all.

What is this slop people talk about?
