Topic: Porsche 914 in Lemons?

Yes, that's my dream.

A four cylinder motor ain't gonna cut it though.

I have two ideas:

1. Re-ring my flat SIX 2.7 that's been in my shed for quite some time and fab up an intake manifold that allows me to run a 4bbl of some sort. I already have a wild 6-into-1 tee-pee header that came off a sand rail. I also have a 911 oil tank and I would pull some hocus-pocus to come up with a BIG oil cooler.
2. Install a SBC. Lot's of fab work and junk yard scouring for this one.
A friend of mine has been trying to give his SBC for years. Up until now , I've been waving him off...

Stock suspension chokes on a 914.
I'd need to make sway bars, modified springs, custom flares and some groovy aero package. Janky front splitter and a wing I scored off a wrecked GT3 last year.

I was already planning to have some cool rims made for my 'real' 914, so I'd borrow those. ( 16x10's ) Stock brakes with Porterfields will last 20 hours.

Sure, we'll never win, but it will be a whole cooler than 'filthy'...
( Don't curse us )

And it's going to be better by the time the Sears Point race rolls around, so you'd best bring your A-game, punk.

But seriously, go for it.  What could possibly go wrong?

Let's define out terms, shall we?  You bought a car that might work to bolt parts on, or a magnanimous soul "donated" another car to your cause?

I'm interested to know because I've got some buddies at JP Magazine who want to "donate" their just finsihed a turbo 4.0 I-6 based engine that put out 692 hp and 777 lb/ft.  Just sayin'.

That is a piece of rusted out crap.  I could see the value of the 914 being the cost to tow it away, really.

Tell us... how do you REALLY feel?

And Trekkor, I honestly can't see what you have against the 914's four-cylinder engine.  The Big EASY car puts down literally DOZENS of horsepower.  And it's got one of those horrible '70s four-tip exhausts, which will put fear in the heart of all the big V8 cars.  The suspension will be properly dialed in by the next race, too-- the car wasn't finished in time to do much testing, so the suspension was stock except for hot-rod sway bars that the DPO had put on.  For what it's worth, the big, fat rear bar made the car spin-happy, and we took it off on Saturday night.  I only got to drive it on Sunday, and it handled well and felt great... but pictures revealed that it was lifting the inside front wheel on every turn with the faster drivers (not me) behind the wheel.  Looks like a slightly higher rear spring rate is called for!

Re: Porsche 914 in Lemons?

You need the largest front sway bar you can find. ( read: make )
My track car has a 31mm. Those cost more than the $500 budget for the car, so some crafty fab work will be explored...
Stock rear bar.

The ride height needs to be about 4 inches. ( not eight! )
Also, some hokey air ducts for the front brakes.

If I can get a wink and a nod from our 'Friendly Judges', I'll move on this!

Would you like to see that?

Did you know that the 914 was a class winner in the 1970 running of the 24 Hours of LeMans? ( and sixth overall )

2010 running of the 24 Hours of Lemons, 40 year old car and 40th anniversary...

Re: Porsche 914 in Lemons?

trekkor,
our Lemons 914 is under construction already, too bad you are not out here in the midwest, I got a pair of them for $600 and both front, rear trunks and interior were filled with extra parts! one runs beautifully, the other has been swappped to carbs and we have not messed with it yet.

I would love to see it.  I like 914s and think they should be good handling cars with decent guts.  Get that car and make it happen.  My comment was pointed more towards "that is a Lemons car" than "what a POS".  It looks like a great candidate and should pass muster in BS court, depending on what you do to the guts of course.
