Topic: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Hey gents, myself and four amigo's plan to make a car for the Laissez les Crapheaps Roulez in November.  We would love to race, but we are scared....not of the race, not of the other drivers....I am really scared of prepping the car and not being accepted. Me and my brother have raced motocross for years, and one of our friends that would be a driver has been in a few amatuer car races, so the racing is not what gets me. It's putting this money in, and not getting to compete. The problem is, none of us are really in a position to lose money, one has a baby on the way, two are going to college after the summer. So every dollar is going to be significant to us. Now dont get me wrong, we are dedicated, fun people, and we are all commited to doing this. We just have some anxiety over it, I was just wondering if somebody could give me some words of encouragement, or maybe put some of my fears of being denied to rest.

Thanks

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

1. Find someone local who has prepped a car for road racing (SCCA, NASA, BMWCCA, PCA).  Offer beer and pizza for an hour of their time.  Have them read the Lemons rules before they crawl all over the car.  Ask them to point out areas they think need improvement to pass Lemons rules as well as stuff they think needs improvement to meet SCCA/NASA/etc rules.

2. Take photos and post them here as you build.  You will receive LOTS of advice (criticism?), almost always in the form of unofficial recommendations from fellow racers.  Do not count on receiving official decrees from Lemons officials.

3. Show up at the race as early as possible with food, tools, and as many helping hands as you can round up.  You will find your fellow Lemons racers to be extremely helpful and resourceful.  Make friends quickly in the paddock and ask if anyone from an experienced team to eyeball your car before you head off to tech. Send your lackeys off with food/drinks/tire pressure gauges/torque wrenches in hand to the paddock spaces of any team that helps.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Thanks man, we are some really handy guys, we have a diesel mechanic, a certified tinkerer, and two mechanics sons, so we are some pretty handy guys. I am 100% certain we can build something to pass tech, I was more worried about acceptance to come to the race. I wasnt sure how many people get past the application part, thats what I am worried about...any advice on that? Again, thank you.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

If you are rejected, no reason you can't reapply for the next one.

Or you can get a car with little-to-no chance of being rejected.  They seem to like Non-Alfa Italians, British, and French cars.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

You should be able to run a forum search and read for hours suggestions for themes, entry videos, and get an idea for the crazy ideas that will help you.

The thing that comes to my mind when you say diesel mechanic is to put his abilities to good use.  Throwing a diesel in some other car would likely be smiled upon and help your chances, and you should be able to run for days with it.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Sounds good, thanks guys. If we plan to be able to afford this at all, we are going to use a rolling prelude. Guess I need to find out what type of powerstroke we can wedge into it now. I like the idea, makes me warm inside.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Also .. you could buy the car and come up with a theme, but not work on it until you get accepted. If you don't get accepted, just sell the car. If you do, 10 weeks is plenty of time to build a car.

The New Orleans race doesn't fill up, so you have a 99% chance of getting in. Just don't bring a Miata........

Ditto. And have a good theme, so you will be one of the few there with one...

A 7.3 turbo powerstroke in a honda would rock.  The engine and trans would weigh as much as the entire rest of the car but it would do some great burnouts.

Just be sure to fill out the essay portion of your application. Jay tends to reject applicants who leave that part blank.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Buy this car. Start prepping it for the race. Virtually guaranteed acceptance and you'd probably be in contention on Index right from the jump:

Advice on selecting a car, directly from the judges - http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewtopic.php?id=3669

Our E30 is going to be retired at some point and replaced with something more suitable.  Well, maybe the drivetrain will be replaced with something more Lemons worthy.

Thanks everybody for the replies, if Louisiana has a little lower attendence then it sounds like a good one for our first. You guys have no idea how much my guys are digging the idea of throwing an old powerstroke into the roller.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Where are you at? If you can, go to No Problem for the race on May 1st. At least you can get a feel for how things work with the judges and all that stuff.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

We like stupid engine swaps. But don't feel like you're chained to a Prelude. Consider these fine Lemons race cars in your area:

1990 Mazda 929, $500

1978 Olds Delta 88, $400

1971 VW Squareback, $300

1988 Chrysler New Yorker, $400

1973 Olds Cutlass Supreme, $500

1985 Chrysler Le Baron convertible, $450

1968 Volkswagen "Bahai," $400

1964 Corvair Monza, $500

1976 MG Midget, $500

1985 Jaguar XJ6, $500

1965 Imperial, $400 (will need weight waiver from Jay)

1979 Olds Toronado, $500

1957 Buick Special, $500

1985 Cadillac Fleetwood, $500

1993 Acura Legend, $350

1995 Mazda MPV, $250

The six one down in Phil's post is listed in the CL ad as a Chrysler LeBron.  You could paint it up in Cleveland Cavaliers wine and gold and do a LeBron James theme.  You'd even have a choice of car number.  He is currently #23, but next season, he'll be #6.  smile

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

Unfortunately, I live in Alabama, the land of nothing but crap for sale, and also nice things that people couldn't afford and had to sell. The furthest I could go for a car is west MS or East GA. I have combed craigslist and cant find much on interest in my area's.

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

If you live in the land of nothing but crap for sale then you are smack dab in the middle of Lemons heaven! Crap is precisely what you want! I was down in South Texas about six weeks ago in the rural Rio Grande Valley and I couldn't believe the superior Lemons cars that were stashed all over dale and yonder, just dying away out in the boonies.

Remember: great Lemons cars are basically 100% the opposite of what you want to drive on a daily basis. You want something of marginal to poor quality, preferably with a lot of surface rust (but not structural), and preferably from an orphan marque or something Franch. So go for a country drive and keep your eye peeled for Studebakers, Olds, Packards, etc. that are under a lean-to or open barn. If they are in really crappy shape, you might even get one for free if you can just tow it away. Those are the kinds of cars that will certainly get you into the race and will get you a lot of notice while you're there. Good luck!

Re: I would love to race, but I am scared...

You have already found the best resource on the internet to help you with Lemons!!  If you choose a good car (basically anything other than an E30 or miata) and have a good theme...you chances of getting in are pretty good....

the other big obstacle is making sure your car passes tech inspection...  Lots of advice around here to help with that or find a race shop that can help you....

A realistic budget for the entire weekends expenses will be around $3k....  that includes the car, gas, everything but food-lodging.... $3-4k is a typical figure for most teams for a weekend...

Are you kidding me?  After a two minute search, I found these gems in Alabama.  There are tons more, but you get the idea.
