Would the environment be as fun if there were no themes?

Also, if they just want to drive in a fun environment for cheap, without bothering to make their team/car more interesting, they won't mind ten penalty laps.

Not sure I feel like you need a penalty, I do think once the races start to fill they might start not getting in as an always unthemed car.

To theme though really doesn't have to be expensive.  My theme wasn't a crazy one but was a theme and all it took was a gallon of house paint and a quart of rustoleum metallic paint, and an afternoon of work.  As a plus it made it way easier to find the car on the track, in pictures, and on the Speed Show.

Re: Just to clarify: Is THEME included in the $500 dollar budget?

Give teams more laps and worse penalties if their themes suck. I say this with the full understanding that painting a Union Jack on a Jaguar isn't really a theme. We are working on updating the paint for our new engine, and we might put on some costumes as well.

At MAM there was a Supra in the tech line behind us whose theme might have been that it looked like $#!+. Judge Phil came over and said "You still haven't painted it yet?" I piped up that we had some leftover paint and brushes and the driver didn't seem to appreciate that. Nothing came of it though. A lot of people did come over and compliment us on how good our car looked on the track, so please at least spend a little time with some paint and rollers.

[stepping on my soap box]

Penalty laps for theme less cars?   Bad for businesss.  What if it is a crappy theme?  The unspoken "rule" should remain unspoken.  It's a lot easier to to talk your way out of a turbo charger if the team captain is dressed up in a duck outfit and the rest of the crew is sporting Chef Emeril costumes chasing him around with knives.

Lets not take the fun out of the event with a lot of oppressive rules.

Re: Just to clarify: Is THEME included in the $500 dollar budget?

Good themes = good for business. That, and TV ads like the NASCAR one, will put paying spectators alongside the tracks, and get more people involved. I wouldn't call it oppressive. I'd call it encouragement.

Re: Just to clarify: Is THEME included in the $500 dollar budget?

Although we do what we can to show up with a theme (we were told that we needed to mix things up after five races with the Asston Fartin Neon), what brought us to Lemons was inexpensive and clean/safe racing.  I never really get the time and effort that some folks put in to a crazy theme, but I'm glad that we and they have a series we can appreciate in two different ways.  But, don't penalize me if I'd rather spend my time keeping a crapcan running safely while hoping I have some shot at finishing let alone winning over putting together the single most creative Charline Sheen theme we can think of.......!

Without the racing, it would just be a parade.........

Re: Just to clarify: Is THEME included in the $500 dollar budget?

My opinion is just that. You don't have to like it or agree with it, but I'm certainly not alone in wishing to see fewer boring cars and more fun themes. However, some of you would rather just race. There are plenty of places/series for that. Lemons is only one of a number of options. Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone to leave. I want you to be MORE involved in the success of the series!

The spirit of Lemons, the one I'm encouraging, the one Phil and the judges are encouraging when they give you rattle cans in BS and tell you to come back with a theme, THAT is what sets it apart, and, IN MY OPINION, above the rest. How many times a year do these tracks host races? Practically every weekend they can, right? How many times a year do they see a race with the fun/interesting/absurd/crazy costumes and car themes that our fans truly love?

They see them when Lemons comes to town.

Now quit making excuses, and go theme your junk.

Yes. Clearly we are socialists. The true mark of socialism is a themed race car/team making a race more fun and interesting.

I agree. From what I've seen, Eyesore does a great job of being quick, reliable, and a decent theme.  I keep an eye on their Facebook page, and it looks like they're also very good at getting a ton of people on the team to hit all three angles completely.

Re: Just to clarify: Is THEME included in the $500 dollar budget?

What is the going "unspoken" lap rate for Crap Theme Cars? Of all the teams/drivers i have met and talked with, my Favorites are the ones challenging there own building and racing abilities. I can go to almost any track and see stock looking cars racing but only in Lemons can i see the "BATMOBILE" pass the "MIRTHMOBILE" will being followed by a bunch of "FLUFFY BUNNIES".
