If it has the towing package '89 should have a tow mode switch for the trans which holds shifts to redline under full throttle. My '89 4x4 Cherokee had that and it was pretty fast 0-50. If yours doesn't have the switch it should be pretty easy to retrofit it.
BTW is is a Peugeot transmission or a Renault one that came in the manual Cherokee? If it's Peugeot trans we might have a cheap source for spares for our 505 if you have any extras lying around. FYI we're from the Seattle area as well.
Yup, we're in for TH!
I doubt it's a tow-pack equipped rig as it's a 2WD...but who knows. Is the button you're reffering to the "performance/economy" switch? I'm more concerned about it doing a 2-1 downshift under WOT mid corner than reving out to redline...it IS a 4-liter after all.
The crappy tranny I'm talking about is the BA-10, a Peugeot unit. I slipped and wrote Renault because they collaborated with AMC on the original design and I've probably had a few beers too many. Amazingly, my '98 trail rig STILL has French parts on it...like the rear window wiper motor...that doesn't work.
Anyway, the AW4 auto is a very stout unit and will serve well in its intended purpose, which is staying alive. I hate the idea of a race car with an auto, but it makes the most sense. Oh well. I'll buy the first round of beers at Jimmy Mac's Roadhouse in Federal Way if you're up for it sometime...us NW'ers have to stick together against these Cali cheaters.

P.S. I used to have a 505 diesel: Worst car I've ever had the displeasure of having my name on the title of...which says a lot as I've owned an SVX and a DSM.
