Topic: Cage Questions with pics

Hey all I believe a team member has forwarded these to Nic but I thought I'd post these up just in case.

Our main concern is if the curved bar going to firewall area is going to pass tech or if something needs to be added or what not:

We also had questions if sleeving to the main upper hoop is acceptable.

Thanks for any input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Cage Questions with pics

I'm no cage guy, but I would say no. In the event of a rollover, that kink would just collapse if there were pressure at the top of the A-pillar bringing that dash crossbar chopping down on the driver's knees. I wouldn't want to roll it.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

just cut a chunk out of the dash and try again.

better yet, just loose the dash.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

NASA and SCCA cage rules are close enough to each other and Lemons is now essentially the same.

NASA CCR: http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf
15.6.9 Halo Hoop (Option 2)
A “halo bar” extends from the main hoop (in a forward direction) following the roof line to the windshield then following along the top of the windshield, then following the roof line back to the main hoop, thus creating a “halo” over the driver’s head.  A “halo” bar shall be constructed of one (1) continuous piece of tubing.  One (1) down tube following the “A” pillar must support the “halo” on each side of the car.  The down tubes shall incorporate no more than two (2) bends each.

Also refer to the Lemons cage update: http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewtopic.php?id=328

The halo style front half of the cage is legal.  The A pillar down bars have 2 bends which satisfies the letter of the law for NASA and SCCA so you they wil pass on a technicality.  Another problem is that sleeving.  WTF is that doing there?  Did you cut those tubes short and have to extend them?  I guarantee that tech will think the same thing and flunk the cage.  Also, the kneecap buster dash bar under the steering column is a horrifically bad idea and might also draw a failure at tech.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

A bit OT, but just in case your harnesses aren't just in for a temp quick fit, it looks like you haven't double-backed the shoulders. If so, the will come out in an impact. If they're there just for a quick fit, sorry for the digression.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

WTF is with that "sleeving"?  Does the front bar connect to the halo bar and you put that over it as well?

If you put that there to extend your front bars, then it's not going to pass tech. No way, no how. Even if it really is a sleeve OVER your good connection, i'd say they would be liekly to fail it just because it looks like you've extended that bar and you'd have a very hard time proving otherwise.

Between that and the funny bend, i'd recommend to cut them out and start over. Maybe try taking the dash out too while you're in there.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

I wouldn't get in that thing with the extra a-pillar bar bend and the leg amputation bar there. Check out these a-pillar bars, come down thru the factory speaker holes:

Re: Cage Questions with pics

Wow, if you guys saw some of the crap that passed tech at the past weekend's race.  Our cage looks like it was built by Hendrick Motorsports compared to most.  Forgot about all the shitty welding we saw, the designs were just plain wrong.  One car in particular had a main hoop that had been cut and butt welded back together.  Main hoops are mandated to be one continuous piece with any rule set you want to use.   Next we saw a cage with NO diagnonal that went from the main hoop top to one side.  Once cage looked like the welder used bubble gun about 1/2" thick and just kept plastering it on.  I guess he thought thicker was better even though there was obviously no penetration.

I started to take pics and post them up, but decided it's not up to me to decide whether or not some people are stupid enpugh to trust their lives to the crap cages/welding I saw.

BTW, what has been said about your dash bar is correct.  That is a 100% knee buster if I've seen one.  Loose the dash and move that bar.

thanks all at least we have a couple weeks to redo it smile

Re: Cage Questions with pics

Piling on here but .... if the downtube doesn't collapse and kill you the dash bar will certainly cripple you as you flop around in a roll over.

Believe me, when your roll your legs FLAIL around.  Don't ask how I know.

Re: Cage Questions with pics

In a serious frontal impact, you legs will extend involuntarily and violently, with enough force to break an ankle, at least. Like Spud, don't ask me how I know this! Padding won't help with the knee bar.....But Honda Michelin cars up here used a dash bar that simply ran over the steering column in front of the instrument cluster...you don't need stock gauges anyway. Just a thought.
