And on to the cage install. 1st are landing plates and boxes. Trying to get them fitted, leveled, square and plumb.

At this point the landing feet are welded in and the boxes are tacked. Time to mock up the main hoop, half laterals, sill bars, windshield and dash bar.

First rule of cage install is...cleanling. Also the worst part! Prepping pipe for weld. Scotchbrite, tube sander and lots of acetone.

This is July 2023. At this point I've had the car apart for about 2-2.5 months. And my brother flew out to help for a week. Super thankful for the extra set hands at this point in the build.

Main structure is tacked and/or welded in these pics. Also fitting and tacking the roof X, windshield support and temple bars.

After the cage was all welded up, I cut up some scrap steel. Pulled out the dimple dies and made gussets and tie in points. Also, welded in the taco gussets from the kit.

At this point I needed to figure out a steering column. I was going to use aftermarket but decided the stock shaft would be easier. And the factory shaft is collapsible and I thought that would be safer as well. So I unlisted the column and dash bar from Fakebook and got to measuring. I removed the column mount from the dash bar, found center of seating position and welded it in. I also welded in a bracket on the left side of the dash bar for trackside emergency personnel.(Fire & Kill Switch) Then I put the cage in primer.

While I had the Blue spray paint out and the roof off. I decided now's as good a time as any to cut up the roof a little bit. I bought a RV vent, scuffed it up and hit it with some blue paint. I figured since we're mismatching Blue spray paint we might as well mismatch it all.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Next on the agenda is wiring.

So I'm using the factory harness and removing the following:
SRS, ABS, Integration module, A/C, Audio, Combination meter, Cruise, Door control system, DRL, Fog lights, Interior lights, Keyless entry, Power windows, Power steering, HVAC, Rear defrost, Seatbelt warning system, Security system, etc

This is eased by the car being OBD2 but pre 2008/Canbus. The main thing here is to make some decent notes, used your OEM and Colorwire diagrams, any and all electrical devices you are going to install before cutting. Then start cutting, tracing and tracking wire. write down in the notes or on diagrams where you want to merge wires, harnesses and integrate into.

Here are a few pics of that process. I did this with all the harnesses. Front, Engine, Trans, Bulkhead, Instrument, Doors cords(removed), Rear, Roof, Fuel, Trunk. That way I knew what I wanted where, what to depin and repin, junction blocks, connectors, fuses and relays. It was all laid out in advanced with my sketchy notes on the factory wiring diagrams. And i now have these for future reference that will go to the track with me.

This is the bulkhead harness. You will see multiple different colors of electrical tape throughout my wiring pics. Green means keep, Red is remove, orange is IDK, etc. I use colored tape for merges, bulkhead passes, and cut to length. I also wrote the connector numbers from the diagrams on all the connectors for ease of finding when going back and forth. Speeds things up.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Alright. next up on the build list is to test and verify the wiring before I wrap it. The best way to do that is a Fire Test! But first I needed a battery. The one in the car worked if you kept a charger on it, It was from 2016 I believe.

Now I bought this battery used and at the time I didn't realize that batteries counted against your budget. I've been reading the rules (at this point for months) and doing the best I can interpreting them. And no excuses, this is going to cost me laps.

I ended up paying $125 for this little battery. It's a pretty impressive little unit.
https://i.ibb.co/CHx88cP/Battery.jpg

Next I need to mount it in order to do the fire test. So here come the CAD.

https://i.ibb.co/1b6HwFM/PXL-20230823-004146613.jpg

The cardboard aided design transferred over to some scrap aluminum and welded. I need to add another hold down and anchor point. It's extremely solid but the rules state "must be held down by at least one piece of substantial metal that’s strongly retained on both ends" My little retention tab is really tight and almost a 2 person job to get the battery out of the box. But rules are rules and better now than at tech.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

I've mentioned a couple times in this thread about scrap steel/aluminum. It's quite literally scrap. There is a metal distributors in Fort Collins that has an outside bin that is free for the taking. Full of one offs and drops. Just wanted to clarify.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Now that the cage and wiring are done. And the car didn't burn itself to the ground. Time to move on and do some interior stuff. So I wanted to make a rear divider between the trunk and cabin. And also make door cards for the gutted doors. I picked up 2 sheets of ABS plastic from a local plastic company.

So back to the cardboard development.
Template for the divider. You can also see fire suppression mockup as well. I'll touch base on that here shortly.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

The first step in door gutting is, you need to grab your deathwheel and just start cutting.
https://i.ibb.co/bLdqD5S/PXL-20231119-182455004.jpg

Actually it took a little more forethought than that. So, since I sold the original door panels and related things. You know like the door handles! I needed to figure out how to get out of the car after closing the doors. So like most people would do, I found a set of recliner handles.

I needed to keep some of the inner structure to the door for the new handles to be secure and functional. I even flipped one of the window tracks around to secure the cable pull to the latch.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Back to fire suppression. I figured out bottle location as you saw in some previous pics. Now lets figure out nozzle locations and junctions. Here is my drawing I did on my phone so you can see how we are going to map it out LOL.

Purple are nozzles, blue are junctions, red is tubing and orange is the firewall.
https://i.ibb.co/Gxy33tX/PXL-20230812-124707635-2.jpg

I'm using 6 nozzles. 3 inside and 3 in the engine bay. I made up some mounting tabs and got to installation. I used a tubing line straightener to get the tubing laser straight and then a tubing bender to, you know, bend tube.

Interior nozzles I have 1 each on either side of the button box. 1 pointed at the drivers crotch and same on the passenger side. I also have 1 down by the drivers dead pedal. pointed in the same direction

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

So remember when I bought those 2 sheets of plastic. I needed 2 because I couldn't fit both door cards and the divider on 1 sheet. But now I have 3/4 of a sheet and a bunch of scrap pieces left over. So this is where I'm going to get a bit crafty.

First. since I sold the HVAC unit and controls and welded up the A/C and Heater holes in the firewall. I still have a gapping fresh air hole in the cowl. So lets deal with that. Time for some math and an oscillating mutli-tool. Cuts plastic like butter.

Came up with a design and temple to sandwich a piece of ABS inside 2 other pieces and make a slider for the cowl vent. That, along with some foam, allows me to open and/or close the vent for fresh air into the cabin.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

So with the under side of the dash all done. I can get the dash ready to install. Now in order to do so I need to cut it up a little bit. In a previous thread I showed that I put a bracket on the left side of the dash bar for trackside emergency personnel. That now impedes with that corner of the dash. So I had to cutout that side of the dash and mold and shape some new plastic to make everything happy. I don't have any pictures of that process for some reason, so I circled it in red in the photo.

After I got that done, I scuffed and cleaned the dashboard, smeared glue all over it and flocked it. Flocking is a matte texture used to reduce dash glare on race and rally cars. It is very reminiscent of suede/alcantara. You can see just how close it is to the steering wheel suede.

Re: New guy? Back to race in Lemons. Now a build thread!

Now in order to keep this car street legal for a little while. It requires me to maintain the hazards, turn signals, horn, etc. The reason for streetability is, of my 3 girls, only one is proficient at driving stick. The others where taught long ago but have never actually put the skills to use. So I need the car to be drivable for a while longer to get them up to speed. Pun intended.

So with some more scrap plastic I blocked off the original vents in the dash and added a horn. This center vent piece also retains the factory hazard switch. Unfortunately, I removed the cup holder. I added a phone mount for GPS phone speedometer and I maintained the OBD2 port for future diag/trouble codes.

https://i.ibb.co/3WZhDGH/PXL-20231019-231532358.jpg

I did end up adding a center gauge cluster to monitor critical info. Although the cluster lights work, I needed a way to actually see what is going on. Instead of a light coming on indicating "Hey it's too late"

And yes I did pull the gauges apart and paint the needles to match the tach. It's the little things!
