Topic: Seat rear support

Ok, my team has a wide range of heights in the drivers. Our seat has a nice set of sliders and we want to seat to remain adjustable for the race. I know we are required to keep the seat from failing backwards, is having the belt mounting cross bar a few inches behind the seat acceptable?

Re: Seat rear support

It's fine so long as your seat doesn't move more than 6 inches from the bar. If it's beyond that, it will fail tech for not having a rear support.

If you need to move it more than this, you can either fabricate a movable support or purchase one. We use this one from IO Port and it passes tech every time, but it wouldn't be hard to fabricate a sliding mount that serves the same purpose:

Good luck!

That's the unit our car has.

Re: Seat rear support

Where in the rules does it state the seat back support cannot be more than 6 inches from the rear bar ?  The IO support look like its longer than 6 inches ?

From the rules:

3.2: Driver's Seat: Driver's seatback must reach above middle of helmet or higher. One-piece SFI- or FIA-rated competition seats very strongly encouraged. All seats must be very securely mounted to the floor or cage to avoid separation during a crash. All seatbacks must be securely attached to the seat base and braced or otherwise restrained against rearward failure.

Nick Pon's clarification from here - http://forums.24hoursoflemons.com/viewtopic.php?id=2977

"One thing to keep in mind is seatback bracing--while we don't require a fixed seatback brace, we do require something that will keep the seat from tipping rearward in an impact. On most cars, the harness bar serves that purpose--we like to see the harness bar about six inches max from the seatback.

If your range of drivers puts that distance at much more than six inches (with the shortest driver, with the seat moved all the way up), you may need to invest in an adjustable bolt-on brace like the one sold by I/O port."

Re: Seat rear support

You should be able to buy an FIA approved seat.  I don't think Lemons would make you brace one.

You are only entitled to the space you occupy.

Re: Seat rear support

I asked about the need for a brace with a certified seat, they said brace it if it is further than 6" from the cage. we also used the I/O port brace and drilled multiple holes for the different driver heights.

FIA certified seats need braces for Lemons
