Re: mounting items to the roll cage

I just buy a new socket and wrench set every year or two. I just need to figure out what to do with all the "7/16"-type sockets I seem to be hoarding.

Now that I have a garage I've been told to get my stuff in order, especially given that my wrench&tool container became our race car.

I REALLY wish it were easier to a complete all metric set.  Craftsman makes one that I know of (I bought it) - but it's way too big for a gp tool set.

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

The worst is buying the ratcheting end wrenches .. they never include all the sizes - skipping over the cross over points - and buying the individual wrenches to fill in the gaps would bankrupt you.  It's frequently cheaper to just buy both SAE and Metric sets when they go on sale instead of buying just the metric and filling in the gaps with individual wrenches.

I'm not getting a good vibe from that setup. I think that that flat bar will be too limber to give a good grip on the cage tubing. It will just bend a bunch and let the switch pivot around the bar. Bad news when you're doing the roof dance.

I think it's a lot better to use an exhaust clamp as suggested elsewhere. The saddle-shaped piece of channel on a standard is stiff enough so that it won't bend:

Kragen (now O'Reilley's) has them at every store.

Or just let me weld something on for you.

Thanks, Bob K.

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

OK, done.  Thanks for the push, Bob.  I went and got the exhaust clamps.  It's going exactly nowhere.

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

If you have a square piece welded in the corner, not only will it be a place to mount your switch it will also double as a gusset for your roll cage.

True, but their main problem is that none of his team members own or have other access to a welder. That's why he's in this predicament to begin with. But that is otherwise a good point.

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

I'm working my way up to it.  Once I have some time and this first car is ready to race (hah!) I've already scoped out some local welding classes.  Then I have to convince my wife that it's a good idea for me to have one.  smile

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

You should definitely get a welding machine. I'm not particularly mechanically inclined and I honestly thought that, once I'd tacked the few little things we needed tacked on the car, the welder would sit gathering dust. Not a chance, that thing is so much fun! It's hardly been out of my hand since day one, our car is festooned with Frankenbrackets holding stuff on. If I'm being perfectly honest, a lot of the welding I have done could have been avoided....I just didn't want to avoid it!   Get one and you'll love it. It's my favourite tool.  smile

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

Blizzard,

I mis-interpreted your statement of "It's going nowhere".  I thought you meant the clamps still were not solving the problem, but now that I have re-read your post I understand it to mean that the switch is not going anywhere and the problem is solved.

Re: mounting items to the roll cage

Yep, it's all good.  We got all the electrics in place today and the kill switch works.  Engine dies when you turn it off, just like it should.

Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated.
