if your school has an FSAE team, see if you can borrow driver's safety equipment.   That seems to be the single largest per-person expense, and will save you a minimum of $425 per person, if you don't mind wearing somebody else's potentially icky driver's clothing. 

Double-check that they require the same specs though.    it's been 14 years since i was in FSAE, and my memories of college are kind of fuzzy, especially things like details of driver's suit specs.....
