Hrm, how about a Toyota Previa / Pontiac Transport FWD/Mid-Drive van to bring far more awesome to the equation?

Since this one has the pathetic 3.1L, I was planning on using that free 57trim turbo to run off the rear engine, but feed both engines ghettoboost. I even roped a GM engineer to join in the failparty. But the dream was to be the 1st twin-mill. A dream that has been shattered by the MRolla (tear).

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see a dustbuster.

Just had to do a post on TTAC. Please register as commenters and rebut all the "this ain't never gonna work" comments that are sure to ensue. I am confident that the MR2olla will work just fine.

I kinda planned Lexus v8 powered Previa, but decided on just leaving the engine in the LS400 and racing that instead! smile

Re: 2x Engine MRolla Unveiled

There isn't even the slightest problem with running two manuals, they are independent power sources and any load one saves from the other keeps them synchronized, provided they used the same tires/trans ratios/engine rev-limits. You could even be extra smart and use a racing brake style bias bar for the throttle control to alter the torque bias, though it would be not linear due to the power output characteristics not being linear. They couldn't become unsynchronized on acceleration easily, and any spinning up of the front engine in a corner would just hit its rev limiter, and as soon as it slowed down would just sync back up.

Hindering some crappy Japanese auto is just going to overheat it and then you'll be carrying around your spares engine on the track, which isn't that bad I guess.

Ideas are cheap. How about a "pushme/pullyou" minivan? Cut two Dodge Caravans in half. Weld the two front sections together. Run one in reverse. If any thing fails in one end, just drive the other way. What could possibly go wrong?

It's a Caravan. Which means both transmissions have already failed.

Re: 2x Engine MRolla Unveiled

Brave effort at two engines....best of luck!

This car has a slightly different layout, but sort of proves the theory is good and a twin engine car can be built in a shed.  Actually it's almost nothing like the MR2olla, but it's a good excuse to watch a seriously quick car in action. smile

Wow. That did work remarkably well! Heck, finished out nice might be a neat looking street car.
That's what standardized engineering does for you.... you can mix and match most Toyota parts....

I've been so ridiculously busy with our build that i somehow missed this whole pile of awesome!

i hope i get to see this monster on the track at some point!

Re: 2x Engine MRolla Unveiled

How are you rigging up the kill switch to kill both motors simultaneously without electrical cross feed? Relays?

A major concern. A giant 4 pair kill switch would be our first choice.

Re: 2x Engine MRolla Unveiled

Running today under the simultaneous power of both engines for the first time. High fives! From a few 30 yard driveway dashes I can report that this will be a very confusing car to drive.

Larry, I just emailed Paul with 2 kill switch ideas. One is kludgy but would work, the other is more sophisticated and would require more wiring but would look more normal to tech.

If you only run one alternator then I don't think there is anything to crossfeed and you could use a normal kill switch.

Yep that's another good option we're trying. We're going to go with a system with the lowest risk of frying ECUs and if that means we are under-charging battery/batteries we will adapt as required.

Re: 2x Engine MRolla Unveiled

You guys beat me too ! I was going to do a dual motor Wagovan .So I guess i'll got turbo 4wd .

There is a guy on youtube called Durocco.com  and is running 2 2.0 motors in a 90 scirocco and its blow away every car on the road and doing donuts in snow

I remember in hot rod magazine about a guy with a Hyundai tiburan with 2 motors and he won the burnout contest by puttin rear motro in reverse and front motor in drive   two automatics . did the best burnout ever the skid marks were circles people were pushing it around  .

You guys make we want to make the Limo dual engine and 6 tires . wow 4 rwd tires and 27 feet long you think it would push in the corners??
